Better to join a union, like it or not
Whether you like unions or not (we could argue until the end of time, I bet). It appears that non-auto-union members got the short end of the stick here.

Yes, there is no better source for unbiased info than 'The Daily Caller'.
The issue here is a thing called a 'Contract'. And there is also this other thing called 'Law'. Without understanding the 'Facts' surrounding this situation there is no way to know what took place. And when you do know the facts you will see there was no other way to go on this. |

I'd say pension or not, you're better off not paying the neighborhood bully if you're free not to.

Sad to say, from my personal experience dealing with 3 different unions, in different situations, over the years - that seems to have become pretty much the case.

My Grandfather was president of his local in South Bend in the fifties. My dad was a Union member at STudebaker, My other grandfather and an uncle too.
When I bought my first commercial office building I had six unions upstairs. Electrical, Carpenters, iron workers. sheet metal workers, painters and plasterers and concrete and masons. I guess that may make 8 or some may be combined. I did not find a bully amongst them all. They were all intelligent (some more than others) consciencous representatives working to better their craft and their members. The teamsters did things over the years that have given folks the idea that all union people are thugs. Shooting out windshields of trucks and perhaps more....the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa for example. Most union leaders are honest folks. The leadership though does come from the blue collar workforce so there aren't too many Rhodes scholars amongst them....and unions are up against some pretty tough business owners who don't want to give up any of their precious profit......so, to quote Turkish from Snatch...."What did you think they were going to do, tickle him to death? This is not tiddly winks here." The leaders need to be tough to do their jobs. I got along with them just fine and really never had any trouble with them.

As a union member in SEIU, (1982-2003) in San Francisco, involved in contract negotiations, and as a shop steward, i feel that Unions are necessary and even while the issues sometimes got contentious, especially over things like closed/open shop, and were Union dues went, and I hated having to represent members a few times with worthless or phony grievances, not ONCE did my paycheck ever bounce, and the Unions were a necessary thing and a counterbalance to reign in management's tendendency to run amok.
And the Unions brought you the weekend. Never imagined I would ever say it, but.... "I am proud to be a Union man."

It has been so long since there were no unions that folks have forgotten what it was like before.
I can tell you it was no fun.

my only experience with unions is a handful of electrical workers as customers who have the opinion that any non union shop deserves to go out of business and that all small non union shops are rats. The union takes the big jobs and the rats clean up the rest.

Never been in a union so take this for what it's worth but I know a ton of union folks at American Airlines who would beg to differ with you on that account.

A few of us in the UAW as well, also have a less than sterling opinion of union leadership - especially if we're talking at the national level.

I have never known someone at the national level. My guess is though that it is like the boss at work. Everybody complains about him without any real understanding of his job, responsbiliities or difficulties.
Heck my wife always says I don't REALLY work, I talk on the phone all day. The contractos say I don't do any REAL work, I just draw pretty pictures all day. And so forth.
