Beer was also implicated in ALZ because of the nitrate compounds.

Beer drinker's cardiomyopathy liver failure, hyponatraemia, hypo-osmolality, inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone, lactic acidosis, venous gangrene and myoneuropathy.

Um, this is from 1977... I have cut out meat, grow most of my own vegetables to avoid as much corporate toxins as possible. I realize I must be living in a fantasy world thinking beer might not be poisonous ( at least the reinheitsgebot versions). Say it ain't so....

. . . smoked 40 cigarettes a day. In 1969 he was diagnosed as suffering from major epilepsy and he had taken phenobaritone 60 mg twice daily since 1972. Alcoholism was diagnosed in 1975 . . . Later that year he took an overdose of diazepam . . .

As Roseanne Roseannadanna would say . . . You sound like a real attractive guy!

that works out to over 13 twelve ounce beers a day, not to mention two packs of cigs and barbituates thrown into the mix. Interesting that they blame it on beer in the title. Wonder why they didn't title it "Heavy smoker's......"?

Poor lifestyle would be another. How would anyone blame it on one item be it booze, smoking or whatever?

Protein intake was at 70% recommended, 16% of which came from beer. Sodium was at 66% with 23% from beer. Potassium was adequate with 60% from beer. Thiamine was 30% Folate was 5%. Barbiturates were in the urine (SURPRISE, SURPRISE!!). Diagnosed an alcoholic??? Whoda thunk it. 40 cigarettes a day. Either of the 3 could have caused problems.

He would have been fine drinking "organic" beer and smoking "organic" cigarettes. Made by mom and pop instead of Big Evil Corporations (TM).

The cobalt did it. That was the story anyway. The buzzard in the article is insignificant in the big picture. Since we are exposed to tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of toxins it seems unlikely that one chemical or even one product alone would likely be to blame for anything so complex. I think human nature makes us want to put a finger on one thing and blame it exclusively.

Imagine the retro view on breathing exhaust fumes that will be told at some point in the future. I am astounded when I see people jogging along side busy roads. .. breath deeper.

Cigarette smoking causes cancer and coronary artery disease, but it doesn't cause (or at least, not to my knowledge) most of the things in that title line. Alcohol, OTOH, definitely does when you drink enough of it. Pretty much any kind will do, although beer I believe is unique in causing hyponatremia.
