Sheesh.

both you and Txjake apparently don't get what he was trying to do over there, and that yeah, he was murdered by terrorists, but that the terrorists do not represent the entire nation of Libya.

The quote demonstrates that Stevens was a valued member of the US mission to the LIBYANS who are trying to build something out of the mess over there as WELL as to us.

Would you prefer our ambassador sit like a turtle in his shell in an embassy? why have one in the first place in that case?

Consider for a moment that the statement "terrorist" is political and created by the government in the minds of the population to instill fear and thereby support their military approach to several areas in the world that they deem correctable.

Making any statement regarding "act of terrorism" is largely irrelevant in my mind. People destroyed property and killed other people. Case closed.

Right.

So, in a rage filled mob that were/are in the process of becoming an ally of our country with a new government, you suggest that marines should be shooting protesters in the street from our compound?

What do think public reaction would be if for example another country did that in Washington? Do you think you would be inclined to follow that countries democratic structure advice?

In my opinion, whoever commanded the marine guards not to return fire and stand down exercised an excellent, and farsighted levelheaded response that will work to deescalate the situation as the truth of the matter sinks in.

Apparently, I'm not.

I don't condone the use of the manufactured word "terrorism". The word was conjured up to glean support of the population, and, apparently, if we take you as evidence, it has worked magnificently.

Do your own research about the event Tom- and do so before you post about the event again.

How could they shoot with no bullets in the guns? Do you read about events before you post?

Honestly, can you cite an article that says the US forces were firing blanks, or firing at all anywhere?

Most of what ive read were clashes between mobs and the riot police in the nations where the protests were. I did read an article debating whether Indonesian police were using blanks or real ammo in Jakarta.

The decision to use blanks if used is the same as the decision to use tear gas or rubber bullets, as you can read in this article about Egyptian forces dispersing the Egyptian mob. Measured retaliation to avoid escalation.

McCain Claims U.S. Armed Libya Rebels To Make Case For Arming Syrians - YouTube

What was this valued member doing out in the weeds with a known marker on his head that day?
Maybe locating weapons that the US didn't give to the rebels? Obama said we wouldn't arm the rebels if one recollects. No chance a story like this would mess up his election chances?
Former Navy Seal Glen Doherty died on a mission doing exactly this.

Quote:
One of the Americans killed alongside Ambassador Christopher Stevens in an attack on a U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya Tuesday told ABC News before his death that he was working with the State Department on an intelligence mission to round up dangerous weapons in the war-torn nation.
In an interview with ABC News last month, Glen Doherty, a 42-year-old former Navy SEAL who worked as a contractor with the State Department, said he personally went into the field to track down so-called MANPADS, shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles, and destroy them. After the fall of dictator Moammar Gadhafi, the State Department launched a mission to round up thousands of MANPADS that may have been looted from military installations across the country. U.S. officials previously told ABC News they were concerned the MANPADS could fall into the hands of terrorists, creating a threat to commercial airliners.

The White House announced today it planned to expand a program to secure and destroy Libya's huge stockpile of dangerous surface-to-air missiles, following an ABC News report that large numbers of them continue to be stolen from unguarded military warehouses.
Currently the U.S. State Department has one official on the ground in Libya, as well as five contractors who specialize in "explosive ordinance disposal", all working with the rebel Transitional National Council to find the looted missiles, White House spokesperson Jay Carney told reporters.

America's secret plan to arm Libya's rebels

Obama asks Saudis to airlift weapons into Benghazi

Desperate to avoid US military involvement in Libya in the event of a prolonged struggle between the Gaddafi regime and its opponents, the Americans have asked Saudi Arabia if it can supply weapons to the rebels in Benghazi. The Saudi Kingdom, already facing a "day of rage" from its 10 per cent Shia Muslim community on Friday, with a ban on all demonstrations, has so far failed to respond to Washington's highly classified request, although King Abdullah personally loathes the Libyan leader, who tried to assassinate him just over a year ago.

I assumed anyone who posted about the event did a modicum of reading about the event. Sorry to overestimate you. I mentioned "firing blanks" with the thought people understood that they had NO bullets. No one ordered them to not shoot as you post as fact- they were forbid to have bullets in the guns they were issued. Glad you can split hairs but miss the big picture. You and Tom ought to pay Rich C a visit and have a long discussion about current events of which you've not read about.

you say they were firing blanks, the marine corp says otherwise. More likely they didn't fire at all and were told to not escalate the situation.

excerpt-

"Additionally, per Time, the Marine Corps said in a statement late Thursday that any reports “of Marines not being able to have their weapons loaded per direction from the ambassador are not accurate.”

Reading up on the subject, it looks like Obama wanted low key US visibility and State under Hillary employed ex US soldiers ala Blackstone style as nonuniformed security personnel. It is Hillary who dictates the bullet issue and decided to not locate Marines at Benghazi. Bloods on her PC hands now.
