lets say I had some dog and pony show outfit -sort of a tini purina hog /& chicken chow buisness.
I strategically set it up in an area where i can get the raw materials dirt cheap-- or free.
I get a few flunkies to go around picking up expired dairy goats and cows that bit it last nite --all the old sick ones. Then they come to the facility and break out a huskivana chainsaw and cut em up- ( we love winter because the critters are frozen stiff and easier to process) one of the flunkies has to go over and get the other of the three ingredients some industrial grade gorn meal and some good ole Waste vegtable oil.
The guy chopping goats up throw big limbs in a wood chipper and get it down to mulch and then the slurry gets mixed with corn meal and wvo to be formed into pellets. these guys get covered in this shhht while they are doing it.
Besides the check, do they deserve common deciency from the boss? or even perhaps to be treated like they are valued?
Or are they just rented mules- to be disguarded and replaced because its cheaper than giving them a damn 50. raise every other yr --if they actually hang around making me money?

We agree on a price for my service and that is that. Nothing more, nothing less. If I find something better, I walk. You find something better, you can me. Nobody owes anybody anything else.

In response to your question, do you, the employee owe me anything? Will you stick with me thru thick and thin even if you have a better offer or do you run the minute you see my ship floundering?

" Nobody owes anybody anything else."
Not even basic human deciency?

When an employer starts the kind of "conditioning" this WOS is doing-its way over the quid pro quo line.

I'm not married to my job. I'm there because it suits me at this time. Nothing more, nothing less. I owe the employer nothing. Should a better offer come out, I take it unless we come to another agreement. If I cannot offer that employer any loyalty or anything else, what does he owe me?

What exactly, would you, as an employee feel you owe me as your employer? Are you willing to pledge something besides our contractual obligation? If not, don't go asking for things from me.

lets start with keeping my nose out of your buisness when you are living your life according to =Life Liberty and the pursuit of HAPPYNESS.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
goes a good bit tward basic human deciency while still being able to controll the guys while they are selling their labor to me (while on the clock). past that, some coffie in the break room, a frozen turky on thanksgiving, a little cristmas party, and once in a while a few
pizza's. And also an occasional "Thanks -You did a good job today".

B-sides, All this shhht cost almost nothing compared to getting another flunkie and breaking him in.

Doesn't tell me what you will give me in return. Will you stick to working with me even though others are dangling better offers in front of you when I am having hard times?

Or having a shindig on company property, with a certain governor and certain union bigwigs attending, ostensibly to announce rehiring of a certain number of people - which took all of ten seconds - and then turning it into a campaign rally for a certain presidential candidate and political party for the next half hour - with all employees ORDERED to attend as a captive audience for the news crews?

You're damn right I'll give him credit. Like I said, at least he gave his employees some warning as to what might happen - had at least some level of respect for them. There's a hell of a lot worse people to work for out there - I know, I've met a few of them in my life.

By contrast, do you even for a second believe that either Obama or Romney would actually GAS if any of these 7000 people still had these same jobs after election day? As aklim would say, the only damn thing a politician cares about is getting your vote, and any benefit you get from his actions is purely coincidental.
I live in a "right to work" state, is the union threatening to "fire" them for voting wrong?

Your point?
I think it is inappropriate to mix politics with work, especially be threatening employees with firing. I also think it's his right to act like an ass; and my right to type on this message board that I think the guy is an ass.

Not without proper incentives. Are you paying me as little as you possibly can? In that case, see you in the funny papers.

Slightly OT, I know a few people who are business owners, and by that I mean real businesses (a couple in construction/trades), not "investment" kinds of businesses.

I can't fault them for feeling personally burned when crap like Solyndra goes down. They worked really hard for a long time to build a successful business, then their tax dollars are taken and given to idiots that can't build a business, even with a handout.

Although I haven't specifically queried them, I'd bet they would feel better about perhaps paying more taxes if the government's conduct reflected some kind of fiscal responsibility with what they've already paid.

Perhaps the stupidest thing I've heard come out of BO's mouth was the nonsense about he could afford to pay a little more in taxes and he knew Romney could, too. Well, big deal. The question is not whether someone can afford to pay more taxes (or should be faulted for structuring their monetary life to take advantage of the tax code), but rather whether they should HAVE to pay more taxes.

Personally, I live pretty frugally and technically could afford to pay more, but until I see something that looks like less than a bunch of drunken sailors throwing around (borrowed) money, I'm not inclined to be all that thrilled about it. This BS of no budget and raising the debt ceiling continually is unbelievable to any thinking person.

Which is what makes this so difficult. I can't believe that with the proper incentives applied you will be loyal to me and you don't believe I am willing to pay more. Simple solution is this. Remove the pretty words and just realize we are contractually obligated. I do 5 hrs of work, you owe me for 5 hrs. No more, no less. Don't expect me to pay more than I have to and I don't expect you to be loyal to me in bad times. Isn't that much simpler?

I wouldn't pay an employee as much as I could. I would pay him as little as I could and still keep him. If I wanted to keep him.

As an employee I look for better offers. My boss expects it and knows I'll leave if conditions are favorable for me. I have this conversation every year with my boss and my subordinates.

So as I have said, what do I as an employee owe you and what do you as an employer owe me? Correct answer is "NOTHING" I work, you pay.

Cash 'n' Carry service is quite a bit more expensive.

You misunderstood, since you are newer to america than most of the rest here-- This is what USED to be the very BASIC stuff offered by the free will agreement of employment.
You want a loyal guy who can at least pretend to be happy getting splattered by animal chunks- you'l have to - at the least-cough up an attractive pay rate or else........... .................... are your workers from south of the border?
