devout or more?

What is the difference between radical and non radical but devout Muslims? Where is that line? The terrorists are clearly and obviously devout Muslims.
When does it transition from devout to violent extremist? How is the world supposed to stop the terror yet allow freedom of religion?

This is for MTU only:

A radical Muslim will attempt to kill you if you are not Muslim.

A non-radical, devout Muslim will stand by and watch the radical Muslim kill you.

You can tell the difference by their actions or inaction.

Well that's worked in Iran and Iraq since JC was POTUS ... and that is where the world seems to be at. Obviously a solution which solves nothing however. It seems the world is becoming less tolerant of religious freedom/tolerance when a overwhelming amount of people die or are terrorized.

I look at devout as a level of belief, for example I was raised as a 'reformed Jew'. The belief in the religious doctrine is very light. We were not Kosher, went to temple every now and then. Belief in the religion and it's roll in ones life is tangential at best. I think Hassidic jews are devout. The religious tenants are the guide for their life and they do not deviate from the beliefs.

I do not think that radicals or extremists fall into either of those categories. I think these people take a small portion of a belief, twist it and turn it into something that no longer has any similarity to it's origin and then march with it. They try and force it on to others and use violence to achieve that goal. I think the violence is what separates. The willingness to force their belief on others by what ever means necessary. I think devout people would like you to believe what they believe but are not willing to kill you to achieve that goal.

Semantics. I suppose someone who is a devout anything is someone who takes to heart and tries to lead their life according to the teachings of their faith. My grandmother and mother were devout Catholics. Mass three times a week. Rosaries said often more than once a day. Lives led in devotion to Jesus and the Virgin Mother. I am glad neither lived to see the ugliness that has broken through the surface of the church with the revelations of all this child abuse. It would have shaken their faith in the church, but not in their devotion to god.

We know a couple well who are devout Muslims. He is African and she is Eastern European. They are saddened and outraged at terrorists who call themselves "devout". They believe that these people are the antithesis of devout, and they cite examples of how secular these people often are when they live outside their home countries. Drinking, drugs, failing to pray daily etc.

I'm sick of the world, not just the U.S. treating these people with kid gloves for fear of offending them and their prophet, but I worry that a lot of the attendant hatred will spill over towards Muslims in this country. That would be very wrong.

When people in the US do nothing when someone is being beaten or killed right before their eyes what are they? Devout? Radical? Apathetic? Scared?
