Anyway, if I'm driving to a job site, I can glance at the job description and simply tap the customer's number to call them and tell them I'm on the way. It won't work if it's periods...

I have been using cell phones while driving since cell phones became common. Never had a problem. The difference between some of us and the great unwashed masses is that we know how to focus on the road and still have a smattering of attention left over for other things. We can also walk and chew bubble gum at the same time. I am safer using my cell than people who are digging in the console for a CD, or adjusting the bass level of the dual 18" subs mounted in the back seat, or the lady putting on make-up, or the mom handing snacks to the kids in the back of the mini van, or the guy with a triple stack burger in one hand and a 96 oz drink in the other, or the person with the three chihuahuas in their lap...
Cell phone while driving laws are just another example of least common denominator legislation.
