Not really worth it at this point. Maybe for a touchscreen tablet, but that all rides on how the app market for Windows 8 turns out. Otherwise the start interface is kind of annoying with a mouse/keyboard and kind of jarring on the eyes.

I also prefer a clean desktop sans more than a dozen or so icons. Its far quicker to type in a program name rather than look through two or three columns of listings.

All Msoft support for XP will be gone within just over a year, so no further updates/patches/support will be provided, thats when it will start to get really bad for XP users. And may companies are starting to pull support for the OS in general, such as google's recent decision to make their web services not function properly in IE8, which is the last supported upgrade to the browser in XP, and is now years old, and outdated.
The system requirements of Windows 7 and 8 are not very high when compared to the average specs of even a "low end" machine available currently. (or even the last 2-3 years) You can build an amazingly powerful PC for well under $400, and can buy one off the shelf for under $500 with great specs. Still using XP is a poor decision as less and less software will support it, malware EASILY compromises it, and overall it is just outdated technology and cannot keep pace with current hardware innovations. I am far from sold on Windows 8, but there's little excuse to not be on Win7 at this point. The longer you wait to upgrade the more painful it is. Clinging to XP is just sad... And over in the MAC camp, people line up for days to get the latest stuff, and it generally costs far more, and is released more often, than windows products. Explain that!!

I agree with every word. Any ideas on how I can convince the Air Force?

Microsoft would do well to offer something that allowed for multiple installations of a purchase, or at least maybe 3 keycode pack for a discounted price.
I've got 5 Windows 7 machines.

And XP is very easily compromised. I would say about 80% of the machines I deal with that end up damaged/infected/needing extensive work are XP, despite an installed supported base that is only about 40-45% XP at this point. Speaks for itself.

May be one day the penny will drop and people will just pay for hardware and software will become something that is supplied or shared - just think how much development work could have been done to XP if it was open source and legal to do so...
