Its not that unusual I don't think. they called Lincoln a gorilla. I think when it comes to things where race is involved, for some people, it can make them pretty vicious. Many of them deny the race angle though. Some are blatent about it though (none here though),

Roughly 18% of the daily technical help calls are from outside the USA.
They frequently mention that the more vicious our politics become, the more hilarious it is for outsiders.

That is one of the reasons I suggest comedians as an alternative..
