De-badging

What's the deal with de-badging. I don't understand it. I guess if you had a lesser engine, and wanted people to think you had a bigger one, you'd do it, but this seems kind of "phony." But I gather some people do it just because the trunk looks "cleaner" without the badge. Could someone explain this to me? Thanks.
