68 Fintail

Do I really want one? A second Benz would be nice and I can get it pretty dang cheap, just requires a 10 hour drive. Its a 5 speed manual. So think 190D. I know nothing of these.

How many members here have one?

Seller may be incorrect. I asked for more details. It was a sorta off-shoot inquiry about the car when I saw it in a picture featuring another car.

1968 was the last year of them in that body style in the USA.

In Southern California it might be a little easier to find one that is not a rust bucket.

But in Wisc. it would be harder than a Chinese algebra teacher on an epic Viagra bender.

Its not in Wisconsin. But I plan on it being my winter beater anyway. If its not rusty now, it will be soon....

You will probably need to get an engine block heater for that old diesel in the winter.

Here's a '65 190D in action.

1965 Mercedes Benz 190D - YouTube.

You could get up to 35 mpg if you go easy on the car, and drive leisurely.

Which you would *HAVE* to @ just 55 hp. lol

You would have to be a tenacious bastard to get a 190D started on a Green Bay winter morning.

I knew a guy in Michgan who had a 190D years ago.

He would start it up in December and not shut it off until March. Problem solved.....

To avoid becomng a human popsicle in winter

You'd also need a Webasto heater from Europe.

Auxiliary heating system for diesel vehicles.

Diesel engines use little fuel and are highly efficient. Consequently there is too little usable waste heat from the engine available to heat the vehicle on cold days. For this reason, many car manufacturers have been relying for years on high-performance, fuel-burning auxiliary heating systems by Webasto and install them as standard equipment in their vehicles. Technically a fuel-burning heater works just like a parking heater - although it only functions while the engine is running.

see:

Webasto - Auxiliary Heaters for Cars

If memory serves they (Webasto heaters) were (rare) factory options for Mercedes Benz diesels in the 1950s-1960s.

Or two! If it is worn out at all, two might not even be enough for it to start on a cold Wisconsin morning.

Yeppers

All kidding aside, that would be a really cool car for toodling around town in the summertime, but, you will NOT be able to get it started below about 25 degrees F.

LOL! I thought of running it overnight if needed. I have a somewhat heated garage as well as outlets to plug it into. And where I work there are outlets all around the place for plugging in block heaters in our fleet.

It would be my first diesel. And I think it would be interesting and less frustrating to enter that world without some restore attempt in mind.

Well if I pick it up, I will find out my options. I have no problem installing what may be needed to keep her reliable and running all winter.

I hope you check out your options BEFORE you buy. Same as you should do with women, Don't ask how I know that.

I have owned 190Ds and even still own a 180D!

They don't accelerate quickly at all, and have difficulty getting above 55.

If you want a car that will traverse Texas at 45 mph and get good mileage., this is it.

If you live in a small town and take your time getting to work, this is it.

This car was the successor to the 180D " Lolaflores" taxi that clattered about Europe in the 1950s-1960s and was meant for urban speeds of less than 40 mph.

As long as you know what the car's design intent is, then you can make a decision.

A better winter beater would be a slightly rusty W123 240D: faster, but not fast, economical, partds easily available.

I have a rusty 240D as my beater commuter and it serves me well all year with an occasional use of the block heater on cold days, new glow plugs and synthetic oil in the winter.

Yes, everything is relative. I expect that after driving a 190D, a 240D would feel like a rocket ship by comparison.
