Since we're still learning about what really happened, shouldn't the call for regulations be put on hold until the point comes that we know why the murderous nutjob did what he did? |
So we have established that you do not wish to sacrifice any rights that you have. What about the rights of the 26 people murdered in CT. The rights of the kids murdered in Columbine. The rights of the people murdered every single day in this country. When do we get to talk about protecting their rights? When do the 'gun rights' folks come up with a plan to protect their rights?
So far all I have heard from you and most of the other gun owners is no no no.. I have yet to hear them make a suggestion on how to fix the situation. As CMB said, either start playing ball or you may well end up behind the eight ball. People like me are getting fed of of seeing people murdered left and right and we are getting quite tired of folks like you saying you will not move an inch from your position. I think it's time you give a little or have a lot taken. Your choice. |

Reasonable people on both sides of the aisle need to come up with some measures which will decrease the occurrances of crazy folks having multiple semi-automatic weapons. I don't have any good ideas how to get there but who can disagree with this goal? |
Far as I can tell, no constitutional right is absolute. Rights to free speech, to vote, have all been subject to limitations and regulations.
I don't see how doing most of the things proposed in this thread would prevent law abiding citizens from buying more firearms. Registering my car, or being required to carry car insurance, or getting a SMOG check every 2 years hasn't stopped me from keeping my car. Likewise, efforts to keep irresponsible people from driving hasn't stopped me from having my driver's license. |

You can't regulate society into Utopia, Australia has proven that...they even banned gun ownership without a permit. You're welcome to read the following to see how well that's worked out for them... AUSTRALIA: MORE VIOLENT CRIME DESPITE GUN BAN |

In other cases, being taught about consequences at an early age could have stopped it from happening. I loosely use the term "bust a kid's ass" to encompass forms of serious punishment. I can count on one hand how many times I've had to spank the kids. |
When I was in school, there was a rather large paddle hanging in the principal's office. It said, "Board of Education" in large letters. Just the sight of it was enough to keep most of the students in line. The embarrassment of being sent to the principal's office to be on the receiving end of "The Board of Education" wasn't a pleasant prospect.
None of the students died as a result of this type of discipline and many were kept in line as a result. Today's society is too PC when it comes to corporal punishment. Spare the rod, spoil the child. |
I talked today with my father, a psychologist, about this event and the connection of several of these shootings involving people on antidepressants and I asked him if antidepressants could potentially trigger something like this. He said (loosely quoted), "A lot of people get so depressed that all they can do is sit there all day. Antidepressants give them the ability to start to do stuff again. This is why so many people that take antidepressants commit suicide soon after starting them because before they didn't have the energy or mental ability to do it but with antidepressants, they do. They could also go out and do stuff like this. People on antidepressants are most volatile in first few weeks of taking the medication or if they take it irregularly or the dosage is incorrect." Then I asked him if he thinks its a problem that people go to the doctor or a hospital and are prescribed antidepressants then are able to leave. He said that he believed that was dangerous and basically said people that are starting antidepressants need to monitored for a while before being released to go home but that can't be done unless the person consents to it, and nobody would. He told me of a story of a man that he had to submit a petition on to have him sent to the hospital because he was suicidal and he was released within hours because when the psychiatrist asked him if he was suicidal, he said no, and legally they could not keep him. This shows laws pertaining to the treatment of mentally unstable individuals need to be mended. He then went to say the shooter probably had several underlying conditions and he would be interested to find out what any of those were if that information comes forward but he guessed he was probably bipolar and schizophrenic.

Many young people today act irresponsibly in so many ways that would have caused serious damage to the family unit back then. So you intuitivly knew not to do something .If you decided to anyways you also suspected the consequences of doing it would be automatically bad. Not just being talked to. The killers mother was a teacher and one has to wonder is she was shielding behavioral issues rather than dealing with them from a young age. You have to grab the bull by the horns. The alternatives never seem to work out. A parent should ask themselves why I have to buy the peace? One family that had four children. Asked me what they were going to do to get the one child from totally disrupting their lives and making the other members of the family suffer. I simply told them to save the majority you get rid of the child that is the issue if he will not come around. First give him an ultimatum and act on it if you have to. If you cannot do this then the whole family may become disfunctional as well. I do not care how far I was off my stick. My basic nature would still stop me from doing anything like this. It is not the consequences of an act like this that would stop it happening. That is not a consideratioin when you are around the bend so to speak. I just like people although many experiences in life are ocassionally less than joyful with a few random ones. I never developed sociopathic tendencies or ever wanted to. If any of our children had shown any tendancies in that area they would have been dealt with period. If I had tried to do simular behaviours my father would have dealt with it seriously anyways. Not catered to it in an attempt to keep the peace. Many parents today are even unable to point out to their offspring. When you make your own living then you can do what you want. As long as I am paying the freight you will act within the bounds of normal or else. Todays generations are exposed to different forms of media that cater to a lot of unhealthy behaviour perhaps. You litterly have to put up unbreachable security to stop this type of random slaughter event that just occured. I tend to think that after enough events it wil just be considered part of the culture and will have less impact just because it is more familiar or common. Of course never for those that are directly impacted. It would not suprise me if this is the plan and has been discussed at official levels already. It cost big bucks to get absolute security in something as large as the educational system. So it will not happen either. Unless it becomes so common there is no alternative. |

Nope. Never have and I doubt that will ever change. Not looking for utopia. Outlawing guns is not the answer and I have not advocated that. I want tighter restraints on gun ownership. I want to make sure you do not sell your weapon to an under aged kid with fake ID. I want to make sure that your weapons are stored in a safe secure location and are very difficult to steal. I want to make sure that you are responsible for the actions of your weapon. These are my ideas. What are yours? Do you even have one? Do you have an idea that will help prevent the slaughter of people? Are there other nations which have strict gun laws that have low crime rates? May be Japan? Two gun related deaths in 2006. They had a murder spree in 2008 and had 11 deaths. UK? Only 18 deaths in 2009. Germany? They had 158 homicides in 2010. Australia may have had a spike in other crimes, what they were caused by is not known but their homicide was 207 in 2007 and 225 in 2008. I suggest you come to the table with something other than "No". Comparison Gun Policy |

Perhaps I am alone in the belief that violence does not solve a problem. I was taught to talk and reason. I have been sent to my room, deprived of privileges but no one has ever laid a hand on me. Not a single time. I do not believe violence solves much. I do not think it helps children other than to make them scared, I do not think it helps in international relations. There are times when force is needed. It should be the absolute last resort. |

I have not read every post in this thread, so my apologies if i seem to repeat others comments....
Opinion. I lay the blame strictly on the shoulders of the media. Sensationalizing this ad nauseum for hours on end with only the sole intention ( So it seems.) of finding out who had done it and publishing his picture for the world to see . You'll all remember the Columbine shooters, the collage shooter, and the Washington sniper etc, by sight and name....but who of you can name one victim ? Because of this notoriety, someone watching this, somewhere, is going to top it. They will want to go out in a blaze of glory having bested an already atrocious crime. Most of us do not, or have never been inside a mental institution and seen how the mind can and does weird things to ones frame of reference, from voices to irrational thought. ( Watching 'One Flew Over The Cuckoos' Nest' does not count. ) This railing against gun ownership is a mistaken cure for this kind of thing. More attention to the drugs prescribed to people should be addressed. Eli Lilly was central to a law suit about Zyprexa, one company amongst other pharma companies with dubious record of drug side effects. Prosac and other drugs are similarly suspect. The mental heath of all these individuals along with their medical records is in question as no reasonable person could be capable of such horrific acts. I have no solution to these happenings but for one, don't think gun control is going to make any difference....as has been said, only the law abiding will conform. In the UK, gun crime is still a problem, and then are you going to ban fertilizers and weed killer, knives, sharp pointy objects etc etc.?. How about motor vehicle traffic...they kill thousands around the globe each year....aircraft can kill hundreds at a time but we still fly. Schooling every kid at home is not going to work either. More gun crime is committed in homes than in the street. If you need to see how casual some folk are about killing...watch the video of the guy gunned down in the street in New York the other day. I see the gun ban lobby as a knee jerk reaction. No doubt something else will happen in a little while and the public, being what it is, will move on to that. We are a strange species. ...besides, here's a thought. When there's trouble...how come we call people with guns ? . |

My respect for my parents is what made me want to behave. I did not want to disappoint my mom or dad. I have done a few stupid things and the look on my parents faces is what stopped me from doing it ever again. I do have to correct my previous statement. I pissed my mom off when I was very young, maybe 6 or 7 years old. I do not remember what I did but my mom hit or shoved me and I remember falling in a corner. The look in her eys scared the crap out of me. The look was not anger but fear. She was terrified of what she had done and that sacred me more. She apologized and so did I. That was the first and only time she ever laid a hand on me. |
