That crap in the grocery store is full of all sorts of ersatz thickeners, high fructose corn syrup and will give you the trots. Make your own.
We call this Ronpope in Sp. 6 eggs 2 cups heavy cream 1 cup whole milk 1 1/2 cups sugar vanilla nutmeg (whole for grating, not that dust in a can crap) pinch salt separate the eggs over a double boiler, beat the yolks and sugar with a wire whip until they are hot and just coat a spoon. Allow to cool. The colder the better beat the whites with a pinch of salt and optionally a pinch of Cream of Tartar till stiff beat the cream until very thick but still runny and add the milk, combine until smooth Combine the milk and cream and with a whip add the egg yolk and sugar mixture. Fold in the whites until all is thick and smooth, adding vanilla to taste as you combine. Serve with grated fresh nutmeg on top and an ounce or so of good whiskey, dark rum or decent brandy. I prefer rye whiskey or Pedro Domeq Presidente brandy.
