Nurses Fired for Refusing Flu Shot

Quote:
An Indiana hospital has fired eight employees, including at least three veteran nurses, after they refused mandatory flu shots, stirring up controversy over which should come first: employee rights or patient safety. The hospital imposed mandatory vaccines, responding to rising concerns about the spread of influenza.

I think I agree with the hospital. The risks with the flue shot are minimal and the risk to patients is much greater. The employer makes the rules. I do not think the employees have a legitimate gripe.

At what point do personal rights end? They say that not getting vaccinated makes you a danger to those around you- Well, those at risk get vaccinated then they're set, unless of course the vaccination doesn't work or wears off over time. The argument that an un-vaccinated person is a danger to vaccinated people defies logic.
The arguments around many vaccinations are fear-mongering.

I heard this on the radio yesterday. I told the Mrs there will most likely be a lawsuit. One of the nurses fired said she it was against her religion....perhaps Amish or German Baptist for that part of the state.

I think the hospital could have perhaps reassigned them to different jobs where patient contact was less.

It will be interesting to see how this works out.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them offered jobs back with limitations as a part of a settlement.

Of course if the people don't file any legal action, the hospital will get its way.

The lovely Mrs engatwork (27 years in nursing) told me that at her hospital that if they refused the flu shot they had to wear a mask covering their nose/mouth while at work. She said it is probably just a matter of time before they do the same at her hospital that they did in the example provided.

That seems reasonable.

Patient safety comes first.
It's similar to the requirement we have in school for vaccinations. No shots, no school. Not to protect your kid, to protect everyone else's. Interestingly, staff were offered free shots but weren't required to take them. I don't know anyone who refused. Being coughed on by two dozen snotty nosed kids 6 hours a day is a pretty good incentive.
When my son was a freshman in school he got yanked out of class the second week by the nurse and sent home because we'd neglected to send in his shot record. Boy was he pissed. Whoops....

Do you disagree with the idea of Herd immunity ?
Herd immunity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

or - Do you think that, even if herd immunity has some applicability, that it does not make a big enough effect to help the most vulnerable ?

I dunno about all that but I used to be pretty religious about getting flu shots but the last few years it always seemed like I got sick right after getting them, so I skipped the shot this year.

I happen to have something like the flu right now.....so I am not sure what to do in the future.

My daughter the pediatrician gets exposed to pretty much everything that comes along and seldom gets very sick. I don't think she gets the shots either.

The flu vaccines only contain dead virus, and a dead virus is, well, dead: it can’t infect you. There is one type of live virus flu vaccine, the nasal vaccine, FluMist. But in this case, the virus is specially engineered to remove the parts of the virus that make people sick.
This is the biggest myth I hear in healthcare. If you get sick after getting the shot it was because you were already getting sick.
I work (as a Paramedic) and I see other Medics get sick from not getting the shot and then come to work and spread it to the already sick and old.
I wish I could fire them for being to dense to understand simple science.

Unless the Nurse signed something to agree to taking any immunizations the Employer required that should not have fired Him or Her.
I predict if this Nurse goes to Court the Nurse will get the Job back and back pay.

All of us have the right to refuse treatment.

I saw this on TV. The Flu Virus mutates rather quickly. They need to make the Flu Virus Medication/Shots a head of time and they kind of make an educated guess as to what exact Virus is likely to make it to the US.

So you could be getting an absolutely useless Flu Shot that does not match the Virus.

This was back in 1970-1973 when I was a Medic in the Army. They required the Flu Shots and I am the one who gave them.
My observations of what happened to other People was most had no side effects, some got sniffles and headaches and a few actually got almost full Flu Symptoms.

Since I was the one of the People giving the Shots I never took the Shots Myself; but, I just stamped my Shot record saying I had taken the Flue Shots.

As the other Member said Hispital Workes refusing the Flu Shot should be required to wear a Mask during Flu Season.

But, what about Visitors in the Hospital?

By the way I still do not take Flu Shots and would not do so unless getting sick would cause a life threatening issue with My Respiratory System.
Also note I recently sent in My Application to renew My Respiratory Car Lic.; for some reason in CA a Respiratory Therapist is called a Respiratory Care Practitioner.

I disagree on this one because you cannot contrast Polio or Diphtheria and so on in the same light as the Flu.

And, the Patient can be adequatly protected by the Hospital Worker wearing a Mask.

Look up nosocomial infections and you will find there is a lot worse things you are more likely to get in a Hospital. And, they are mostly passed on by the Hospital Workes not washing their Hands as they are supposed to. And, it is often the Doctors themselves that forget to wash.

Most of My Respiratory Therapy Training was done at the local County Hospital; the use of Gloves and Masks was common and if you wanted you could wear a Mask and Gloves throughout the shift. Even if you would be wearing Gloves you were to Wash your Hands before going near the Patient or Equipment the Patient had contact with and you Washed again after you removed the Gloves.

We were sent for Training at a local private Hospital famous for Heart Bypasses and was shocked to find that they did not want us wearing Gloves or Masks except in special instances.
In the case of Gloves and Masks the Instructor told us that they did not want the Patients to think We were affraid to touch them without Gloves or be near them without a Mask on.
Yet, as I said nosocomial infections are most often spread by touching the Patient and there was a lot of post surgical Patients.

Amazing humanity survived the plague but apparently the flu is what does us in. Babies, take some vitamins, eat your vegetables.

We used to run into this at BIG oil all the time. If you were going to some 'tropical paradise' (like equatorial Africa) to operate you had to take all the recommended shots or you were not going.

And if you refused the shots you were just assigned to another job.

There was never a big deal about any of it. We would have never thought of firing anyone over something like this as good people were hard to find and expensive to hire.

I suspect there is more to this story, but if not... Well.... I can say that is not the way I would have handled the situation.

Human nature, common sense, whatever, tells us that when someone pushes too hard it is natural to resist. A few years ago the flu vaccine was pushed way, way too hard. It will take years to recover from the backlash.

I took the flu vaccine every chance I could get it for years. I even took the Pneumonia vaccine early 'cause I was exposed frequently. Hep A, B and a bunch of others.

The big push scared me off too.

People have reactions to vaccines. If they didn't ramp up your immune system what would be the point? Symptoms of immune system response have been sold to the public as cold and flu for so long that people think they are sick.

Big Pharma rules the health care industry. Health care workers who don't push pharma are not welcome. Doctors who don't push end up in court.
