The next big thing....
If you had invested in gold five years ago your investment would have doubled.
If you had invested in the Ruger company stock your investment would have gone up five fold. If you had your money in CD's you would have made around 6% total? Anyone have any opinions on what the next big thing will be? I guess a joke or two would be OK here, but this is money we are talking about, so try and keep it realistic. |

Actually, you money in gold would have the same value--its the dollar that has lost value, so it makes it look as if the gold increased in value.

But then I would be screwed if the value of the dollar rebounds... I don't think there is any real danger of that any time soon.

You'd be up 3x with AAPL. 4+x if you got out in September 2012.
You'd be up 6.5x with Priceline. That's looking back 5 years from today. Green Mountain Coffee hit over 10x in Sept. 2011 from 5 years ago. Futures in Chinese minerals could be very profitable as China chokes international supply. Sixto 87 300D |

By the way, I remember a guy about 30 years ago telling me that in 1925 $1000 worth of gold would buy you a nice car. If you had held on to that same amount of gold then in 1982 it still would. |

Somebody with some better financial skills than me should do a comparison of car costs based on the value of gold over the years. Comapre 30's Fords with Dusenbergs and see where today's cars fit in.

Ever since the sanctions, Iran has been selling black market oil and accepting Turkish Lira as payment.
Turkish Lira has been the largest single cash currency used for buying gold in the UAE. Let's connect the dots ... A large portion of gold is being purchased by Iran, using Turkish Lira, as a hedge against loss of value of their own currency. This has put steady upward pressure on the price of gold. What happens to the price of gold if the black market flow of Turkish Lira for Iranian Oil, stops? |

It drops, like a rock.
I was just reading about that, the UAE is getting pretty worried about all the gold that's flowing out of it. Guys it seems are getting on planes with suitcases full of gold, and while suspicious its legal.

The great thing about gold, in the oil trade, is that it is impossible to trace.
During the 1930's a lot of oil trading was done with gold bars. The great depression was on and no one wanted dollars, but that is entirely different from the reasons gold is being used to buy oil today. However, I long ago heard rumors from the old guys that oil from areas controlled by Japan was being imported to the US in violation of some treaty or something, and the fear of the dollar falling was used as an excuse to cover up the payment in gold. Since there was no check to clear the gold could go anywhere to pay for oil that had come from anywhere. When you are dealing with that kind of money a lot of ethics goes right out the window. This all stopped a few months before Pearl Harbor, but by then Japan needed all the oil it could get its' hands on and no one questioned why they were not sending it to the US. No one in the oil business, anyway. |
