THrough middle school and high school, i dont think i ever had a teacher that graded math homework for accuracy. 45+ problems (sometimes 100+) x 30-40 kids... i can see why. Probably a result of cramming too many kids into the classrooms. You can easily check your son's work by seeing if his answers are correct since they give answers in the back...

Nope...his homework is the odd numbers, since the book gives the answers to the even numbers. There's only 18 students in the class. We're talking about an average of 20 math problems as homework. That excuse may work with some classes and some teachers, but not this situation.

When I was in school, the teacher would have a couple of students from the next highest level come in and help grade the papers...I remember sitting there and grading papers with the teacher during my study halls.

I've tried calling the teacher to discuss the issue, but he'd rather communicate through email instead...which I'm against. A teacher that can't communicate verbally has no business teaching, IMHO. I've called during his free periods, in hopes that he's just been too busy for me, and still get his VM.

its up to the school administrators to weed out ineffective teachers, unfortunately not many have the sand to do so. We had a teacher in the HS who was an alcoholic and everybody knew it. I think they finally got rid of him about 20 years later than they should have.

A teachers union cannot protect an ineffiective teacher if the administrators take the steps necessary to terminate. Basically they have to give the teacher two or three chances to mend their ways, in writing and then if not corrected they can terminate.

Its really not that hard but most school administrators don't like to do it.

Thats dumb, teacher should at least assign SOME of the even ones then, so he can check his work. Sounds like your son should do a few of the evens then and check his work against the answers just to make sure he's got it down.

Also, said teacher should be asking for questions on last nights homework. In other words walking through how to complete problem sets, meaning you'd know if you did it wrong if the teach gets a completely different answer. If he's not doing this he's not doing his job.

Judging by the number of posts you have with massive spelling errors, I assume education wasn't your strong point in school. Perhaps you should stick to topics you are more familiar with...like trying to stay in the lines while coloring.

According to the GC, the teacher goes over things like a college professor...lecturing with no time to answer questions. I know of 4 other students, in addition to my son, that have tried going to see the teacher after school and during the mentoring period, but the teacher refuses to see them then...he demands the kids be in his classroom at 7:10 am if they have questions, and the buses don't arrive until 7:15-7:30. If the student isn't there at 7:10 sharp, then the door is locked and the student can't ask their questions.

These are 8th graders...their minds aren't designed to work like a college student. Because of the teacher's actions, students have either moved on without learning the chapter, or they have dropped the course in favor of a better grade in pre-algebra.

My meeting is later today, and should be interesting...
