American car in Germany...

Proper highway driving.

Can't wait for the new C7 Corvette to come out, they are gunning for Ferrari... Carbon fiber everything, (fiberglass is dead) carbon brakes that are larger than anything Ferrari uses on the street, electromagnetic shocks, 7spd manual, and 7spd auto.

The frame is aluminum as the C6's is, but they replaced the center parts with epoxy bonded carbon fiber panels.

Hattie wants a new Z06 when they make it, 2016 maybe? Carbon brakes, 7spd manual transmission, black everything, murdered out, loud exhaust. 3k pounds, probably north of 600hp.

Some 2012 Autobahn recollections.

As many of you know, I spent a couple of weeks driving on the Autobahn last June and July and it was amazing - mind boggling.

They had given away the e220 diesel I'd paid for and so instead I had to take this Audi A6 2.0 turbo diesel. (seen here at Kientzheim in the French wine country, near the Rhine.

I did not know how fast I'd driven because its speedometer was in kph only, but checked my 560SEC when I got back home.

It turns out that I drove 130-160 mph DAILY.

And it was extremely safe, comfortable and relaxing.

Everyone pays attention and left lane is passing only - I stayed in the left lane because I was passing every car in sight.

I did get passed one time though on the Autobahn, somewhere between Stuttgart and Munich i believe. I saw lights moving up on my VERY fast, even when I was going about 130 mph, so I signaled and moved over to the right,

Got a brief glimpse of BMW angel eyes about a half mile behind, and then the car passed in a flash and seconds later was LONG gone, over the horizon ahead....

I am almost certain it was a new BMW M5, that looked like the entire car had been dipped in black paint, even the windows.

It had to be going over 180 mph at LEAST.

............

The Autobahn is constructed for high speed long distance cruising, which is why of course I got the biggest and fastest car I could rent for a reasonable price though I did see a new red Porsche 911 cabrio in the underground rental garage in Frankfurt when I arrived there to get my car.

The Autobahn is extremely well signed, very very deep and smooth, perfectly banked, and maintained, not at ALL like the US freeways, that are often patched and rough.

Even the Autobahnen white lane stripes are about 50 feet long each, unlike the American ones that are around 39 feet at most, so the "feeling" atr high speeds is not unsettling,

And in addition, NOBODY texts or blabs on the cell phones when driving, or eats and drinks. You are there to DRIVE.

Driving fast is serious business on the Autobahn and it is orderly and everyone is courteous and uses their turn signals.

Everyone knows left lane is for passing only, and passing on the right is the ultimate driving offense.

Autobahn POLIZEI pursuits are way different than in America. On the Autobahn, the Police will race till they are in front of you. Then their blue roof lights flash and the sign will, too: "HALT BITTE" ("Stop Please") --- and you'd BETTER!!!

Here's a retired cruiser in the Porsche museum I saw:

Driving licenses take a long time to get, (about a year I am told) in Germany and are very expensive - about $2,300 I am told.

Of course, accidents sometimes DO happen, and when they do, at those speeds they are dillies.

But the Gerrmans are so efficient that they use helicopters to clean up the mess.

My experiences inspired the purchase a month later, of the w212 2011 Mercedes Benz e350 Sport I am now campaigning here in California.

However, being a US version, I have since learnt that, as a US spec vehicle, it is equipped with a speed limiter that kicks in at 130 mph. But I would never test it in the USA.

Got an Email last week, from a friend that lives near one of those autobahns. He wrote that, because of all the truckers that fall asleep after their 10-hour run from the Polish border, his stretch of the autobahn is the 'most closed' road in Germany!

Happy Motoring, Mark

I read in the newspaper today that recently compiled statistics revealed that the worst drivers in Europe are from Poland.

They have the most accidents.

I have no idea whether Vodka has anythng to do with it, but Poles do love their Vodka
