My wife showed that to me the other night. Pretty amazing. I think there is definitely some higher level of intelligence going on there.

I remember watching a show a few years ago where they were talking about self awareness. They were talking about how that trait is what set mammals such as apes, dolphins and others apart from other animals.

Richard O'Barry was the man who captured and trained the dolphins for the television show Flipper. O'Barry's view of cetaceans in captivity changed from that experience when as the last straw he saw that one of the dolphins playing Flipper - her name being Kathy - basically committed suicide in his arms because of the stress of being in captivity. Since that time, he has become one of the leading advocates against cetaceans in captivity and for the preservation of cetaceans in the wild.

Can't you say more for Dolphins than THAT? My Australian Shepherd has more sense than any politician I've ever been aware of.

BTW, I saw that on the news the other morning and came to work telling everyone about it. I thought it was absolutely outstanding. Dolphins are pretty incredible.

I have always been somewhat on the fence about captivity. All things being equal, holding an animal with this level of intelligence captive is horrible. The only "but" I can come up with is that it allows people to come into close contact with these creatures who other wise might never have the opportunity.

I remember the first time I went to Sea World as a child and saw Orcas in the enclosure. I was spell bound. Went home and started to read everything I could find (thank you National Geographic). They made a huge impact on my life and my view on nature and it's protection.

I do not think I can argue that this justifies their captivity but that their captivity can do some good, sometimes.

As we get wiser perhaps there is a way to get them to come in and perform voluntarily. They seem to enjoy the show so with the correct inducement they might be persuaded to participate.

Better yet if we get in boats or in the water and go to their area to watch them.
