Hanford was primarily a military plutonium production facility, and this was exempt from much environmental regulation through the 80s. As well as common sense. Former practices there have zero relation to the current civilian nuclear industry.

We already have the reactors.
Sending the waste to less populated areas seems like a better idea.

Maybe we should ship it all to Florida, and then jettison it into the sun using our outdated rocket program.
