2001 Boxter S

I am considering trading the Formula Ford for a Boxter S. Anybody have one or have experiences about them to share?

Its a 2001 with 110,000 miles.

Yes.

There is no equivalency in value I'm aware of - between those two motor vehicles.......

My father in law had one. Said it was one of the worst pieces of crap he'd ever had and should never have sold his 300SL R129 to get it. To be fair I'm not sure it was a 2001 model but it was around then.

How tall are you? I am 6-2 and do not have enough legroom unless the seat is all the way back, and to do that the seat back must be almost vertical, very uncomfortable. A little better with the top down, otherwise it needs more room.

They are a blast to drive, took a corner with a Boxter S going 110mph of an offramp that I wouldn't have done faster then 80mph in any other car I was driving at the time.

Check to see if the IMS bearing has been replaced recently, and if the rear main is leaking...

Those are really the two biggies to watch out for with those - pretty solid cars that can be had for pennies now!

I am 5 foot eight on a good day with not particularly long legs.

Thanks! That is the sort of info I am looking for. If it comes to an actual transaction I believe I will invest in an inspection before taking the Porsche.

With the early models there were so many engine failures that the dealers replaced entire engines en masse. For these reason, this is one of the few, if not the only car that it is desirable to see that the nine number does NOT match the chassis.

Someone please relay this information to Tom since he has me on ignore.

The Boxster is one of the few Porsches that appeals to me (well, I like the 914 and 911 too, but...). But, I know nothing....

Try to find a boxer forum to get some ideal of common issues as well. I agree that is one model of car I too would pay for an inspection by a mechanic that works on them a lot.

The cause of the engine failures in the 2.7 and 3.2 is the IMS bearing failing, and the cam coming out of alignment. There are a few companies that make replacements which, when replaced, you don't really need to worry about.

Actually, this thread has me googling around trying to learn about these cars.

I've always liked them, but given the early engine failures and the fact that I'm 6'1" I've never looked into them. Given that the early cars can be had cheap, if I could find one with the engine change out or the upgrade that rock described and could get it cheap, I might be interested.

I have finally had to give up on my 300E and I have a C4 Vette that has very little value and I don't even drive it any more. Couple that with my recent hankering for a convertible, and it might be the low buck work car that I'm looking for.

I'm going to do some research on the Porsche forums and see what I come up with.
