He missed the "SWMBO" in the original post.

My wife bought a Clubman S after 20 years of driving Mercedes. After six months she couldn't take it any more and traded it in on an E-class.
The Mini is a slick little car and a lot of fun to drive. We had both the turbo motor and 6-speed standard trans. However, the S rides exceptionally hard. In addition to a very stiff suspension, it also uses run-flat tires. Run flats ride like they filled with cement and are priced like they are made from unobtanium. The other challenge was noise. We had the giant sunroof, which is very neat. But with there is a lot of wind noise at highway speeds, or even on surface streets on windy days. For example, you couldn't take a phone call above 50MPH, otherwise the other party couldn't hear you. If you think you want a Clubman, I suggest sticking to the base model with the base tires (regular tires with a spare!) and avoiding the sunroof. It's the easiest version to live with. |

I wouldn't own an S if you paid me.
A friend bought one, and we drove it around Monterey. It rode so hard, it would knock the fillings out of your teeth.

It rides fine once you take off the run flats. Also helps with torque steer (eliminates it) and cures the tracking issues on the freeway. S or better, without question. In 2011 they gained about 200 lbs. Just, maintain it and maybe get an oil catch can. Only issues I've had were trim on the hood from tracking it, and stuff, and the hatch button broke so I rigged it. But, they usually replace those under warranty. Plenty of not terribly expensive mods.

My ex had a convertible, first year for them. Worlds better quality than the POS NB convertible it replaced. The CVT was interesting, it did it's job ok. The car handled great but the ride was a bit rigid. Decently stiff body for a convertible though.

I have a buddy in Ohio that started off with a 1962 model, and now has 5 of them. He owns a business that imports them. One is a small delivery. They're a hoot!

My wife put almost 200,000 miles on a 2004 Cooper non S. as soon as we brought it home from the dealer I put a beefier rear sway bar. This took out the under steer and balanced the car perfectly. There is no need to get an S to get a fun car. Just put on a stiff rear bar and the car will be a blast to drive without jarring your teeth out. The little engines hold up beautifully. I used Mobil One and 10,000 mile oil changes. It still used ZERO oil between changes at 200,000 miles.
Just don't get a CVT.

If I bought one it would be used as an appliance by my wife, not modded or screwed with. The idea of having to spend an extra thousand bucks to get rid of run flat tires and wheels is not appealing. Then what do you do with them? Put them in the barn with the rest of my evergrowing tail of STUFF? No thanks....

Ridiculous. $20K? Piece of cake, especially for a depreciating paper weight. Now $1000 tires(more than I've ever spent on a set, personally) ?!?!?!? Are you mad?!?!

Don't know about these specific tires but in general new car takeoffs are usually fairly easy to sell. But I'd have the mrs test drive one and see what she thinks. I don't see any compelling reason though to buy the s over the standard one.

So don't order it with runflats. Even so, a set of tires won't cost anywhere near $1K. My wife insisted on ordering the runflats, but when it came tire time, I simply put on regular tires, no big deal.
