Typical reaction time is about .2 seconds. That's long enough to grab and divert if you are in close. I don't know if I'd have the guts to try it or not. Guess I'd have to judge the situation at the time....after wetting myself of course.
![]() Seems like practicing fast draw with a loaded gun is an excellent way to shoot yourself in the lower extremities.

If done wrong, it certainly is. Provided you drill yourself to keep your finger straight and outside the trigger guard until you have a sight picture, you won't shoot yourself. Practicing extensively with an unloaded weapon before trying it loaded at the range is a good idea.

^^^ Finger outside is key.
I recall in my martial arts training fights (pads & gloves and cup and headgear, full-on attack) that most fights were on the mat after a few seconds. Somebody close-in will grab and down you go. I provided the young men with a animated dummy they could whip-up on. But the key lesson that I learned is that some people are naturally gifted and if they work on it, they own your butt no matter what you do unless you too are a natural. In my case think too much and then react too late as a result. I practice draw, point and shoot at 15 ft. I wouldn't call it 'quickdraw'. Hell, I could clunk somebody in the head with the iron and then choot'em. |

I was thinking of this scene and then the actor died. Dennis Farina in 'Get Shorty.'
"You must what they call, uh, one of those quick draw artists, you know because of the way you got your gun stuck way down in you belt like that." About 1:45 Get Shorty (11/12) Movie CLIP - Look at Me (1995) HD - YouTube

Act of Valor
ACT OF VALOR Film Clip - Extraction - YouTube Some of the guys in it are active duty Seals, its about as realistic as it gets. BTW some of it, including that scene was filmed with live fire. One thing that Hollywood often forgets is that gunfighting is a team sport. So you have one person who is really good who saves the day. The real world doesn't work like that, its a team effort. Jormungand is an anime that also nailed it, very realistic just like Act of Valor squad level tactics.
