Bought an old Land Cruiser

For the boy. An 84 4 speed FJ60. It'll be a beater. Needs some sorting. Good interior. 166K original miles, tight dry engine, good clutch. A bit of body rust but the frame etc. are not rusty. New aluminum 3 row radiator, water pump, hoses. Brand new Weber carb that the PO bought and just slapped on. Needs adjustment. Idles a bit low. All pollution stuff removed. One vac hose to the carb instead of a mare's tail nest of them. Passenger front fender and back door are a different color as they were replaced due to backing into a pole and getting clipped by another car.
Got it cheap. 1200. The F2 straight 6 is worth that much around here. Might put another 1500 into it including tires and the other sorting it needs.
He knows about the MPG. Doesn't commute. Pretty much only drives on weekends. Doesn't care, at least at this point.

Nice. I've owned a 72 and 68 FJ55 and currently have a 94 FZJ80. Never owned a 60. You don't want to know the fuel economy.

Congrats on the find! I know you've been looking at various 4x4s for some time now

Damn - that's a good buy. Might even be worth dropping a turbo diesel into it based on the initial cost.

Dare I say its perhaps the only "modern" vehicle which will use as much fuel as that International?

TD conversion is a cool way to go, there is a company out there that sells JDM & ROW market TD clips in the US. Not cheap, but it comes with every thing you need. I had a 68 FJ55 & an FJ80. Loved them both, but the FJ80 drank fuel like a drunken sailor at happy hour. Ihat8mud.com is THE LC forum.....

That truck is never a beater - no matter if you are driving with a wooden stool nailed to the chassis rails and no body work. Yes that engine is a drunken sailor.

you can shoehorn anything in there, toyota make a ton of 4 cyl diesels that fit, I would suggest to find a 1KZ-TE complete with wiring, ECU and original gearbox. its a 4 cyl 3.0 litre fruitcake crazy torque engine. I have put one in a cressida once, umm lets say it was quite interesting with its automatic trans from a Hiace van. Lets say the rear tires were a quick wear item afterwards.

Thirsty too.

Good truck, great buy!

I have a 1989 FJ62. Rusty as heck but about 137k miles and everything (including a/c) works. I must have a fluke because around town mine gets about 10mpg but on the highway running around Colorado I got over 16 on several tanks. It has Borla mufflers but is otherwise stock.

I don't think any motor swaps are planned, altho It'd be cool to put a diesel in it. First order of business is to figure out why the automatic choke on the new Weber that's on it doesn't seem to work.
