Not banned, but you need a permit to purchase (though interestingly, not to own) in NJ and to own in NYC. The rest of NY state is much less strict though.

depends on what you call a hunting weapon. i know plenty of people that hunt with an ar-15.

I know a guy who hunts with his AR-15 variant. With pistol grip and bayonet lug. I used to squirrel hunt with a pistol before my eye got bad. Sometimes I'd even kill one.

Something that the ignorant think can't be used to overthrow the nanny state.

Now that'd be the personification of evil right there.
