Some fraction of the calls come from (212) or (646), which are both local to me. Also, I get business calls, and while most of the people I work with are in downstate NY, NJ, and a few other outlyers, new clients can have a cell phone from Kalamazoo and still be based locally.

Other than wasting their time with endless questions, if they ask for my wife I like to get my best redneck on and yell "that bltch don't live here no more and if y'all see her tell her to bring back my remote control!!"

If they ask for me, It's fun to get real quiet, pause a bit and then in a choked voice say "he died suddenly yesterday, may I help you with something?"

More and more people keep their cell number from the area code of where they previously lived. What with the virtual no cost for calling long distance these days, it's more and more attractive for people to just keep the same number when they move.

I get calls from clients now and then on their cell when all I have for them on file is their land line. Some odd area code and turns out I wanted to take the call.

This. Although the calls are annoying on the other end is a human being trying to make a living doing a detested job....kindof like 100 times more hated than used car salesmen. I usually say no thanks and hang up. Occasionally if they annoy me first I just hang up. No sense wasting your time or theirs, but no reason to abuse them any more than they feel being stuck with such a job.

This response to a scam is very long but hilarious and deals with one person's response to a typical "Nigerian email $ scam". It's one of the funniest I've ever read about.
