The shortest route out of hell turns out to be a Bonded title,seeking a title for a car without one ,one must follow the bouncing ball of paper work . Started out my Monday morning with the mission at hand ,title a titlest car, a predistined DMV FOR YOUR STATE is the 1st step, 5 forms into the process included details of who owned the car ,their statements ,any attached paper work (bill of sale )from said seller and a copy of their DL. Your next step is finding an insurance specialist which they give you a list of who deals in bonded titles ,your trek to them is your 2nd step ,more paper work to go and a day or 2 wait for the returned forms to be OK ed ,another trip a few day later to my local DMV and its now just waiting for my state issued Bonded title .Plates have been issued with state stickers to match ,I m so glad this is OOOver.The final cost ,$15 . at the 1st dmv, $140 for the insured bond,then $154 AT THE 2ND dmv for the plates / stickers and the forecoming b. title.

I am amazed you managed to make this work! I remember in a similar situation I had to track down every interim car flipper 3 transactions back to the titled owner since the first cretinous flipper has signed the title in his name, and then it had been flipped again. The car came with the title, but it took almost 2 weeks to get all that ironed out. Fortunately most of these guys still had contact info and were willing to pass it on to me.

Its an 87 190e 2.3 16v auto ,very clean example with 87k ,the car was worth the headache .It will need to be gone thru ,filters ,pumps ,fluid changes and filter .The gal really had loved this car ,she wants pics also when I have it painted and back in action ,she spent some of her last few yrs living in California behind the wheel of this car and said it was the most fun little car she ever owned from Mercedes, and shes had a few.

Another fun fact from the California dmv Ive come across is that if you ,tow ,park ,transport any vehicle across a California state road and its not currently registered ,ticket time .I really see clearly now how the California govt works , like the wizard of oz.

California sucks.. Simple as that.

Whenever I see a car for sale is like to get and if it's listed in Cali I just avoid it.

I feel for you. Part of my old job was handling titles and registrations for a fleet averaging 184 trucks which were routinely transferred between three states (AZ, CA and NV). It amazed me the amount of B.S. and lack of cooperation which existed between the agencies.

Getting in tight with responsible, competent officials was the only way to keep my sanity. If the person you are dealing with seems hesitant or unsure then talk to someone else. It's worth the time on hold to speak with someone who KNOWS what to do as opposed to someone who THINKS what they are doing is right.

I've never been hassled for towing something with expired or missing tags!

Pretty much all of my friends have no plates on their track cars, and we have never been hassled for lack of plates...

I have a brand new iPhone 6 for sale if anyone's interested...

A friend of mine sold a car in Oklahoma. Then he started getting bills for running the toll road payment reader. He refused to pay them, saying he sold the car. Still the bills kept coming.

Then he got a call saying the state was going to impound 'his' car. So he told them to go ahead.

Tow truck drivers hung around his house for about a month looking for the car. They finally gave up.

There was so much of this the state made it illegal to sell a car with license plates attached. Now a buyer has to go directly to register and buy tags or risk being constantly pulled over.
