wow.

Tough call for those islanders, rats or horrendous horrible giant crunchy nocturnal bugs.

Id be in the camp for keeping the rats, at least we can using them as lab animals. These bugs are creepy in the extreme.

Not a fan of big bugs myself, but cool story! It would be fascinating to see how they would adapt to their new-old home, with considerably more to eat than their current-previous home. Especially from 10,000 miles away.

And I must apologize (to someone) for my first thought of what would they be like after a few minutes in a steamer pot with some clams, chorizo, potatoes and sweet corn. But hey, with a name like "tree lobster" someone else thought it first!

If they were deliciously edible, then that might make it worth it. as it stands, all I can think of is im on the island, had a good dinner, time to step out on the porch in the evening to relax and enjoy the night barefoot, and I step on one of these things, or one drops off a tree onto me.

Looks like the Bug in the Edgar suit

Remember the end of MIB? Looks like they used these as the pattern for the Bug in the Edgar suit!

I was thinking the same thing.

On a more serious note. I think since man screwed it up we have an obligation to try and fix it. Whether or not we like the animals or not it seems nature saw fit to give the island to this bugs and through mans negligence they were nearly wiped out. I think if we break it, we should fix it.

I, OTOH, am a fan of big bugs. The People's Republic of Berkeley has retail outlet, The Bone Room, that feature skulls, skeletons, and framed large bugs among other things. I've bought a few of the near fist sized beetles in framed displays as Christmas presents for one of my nieces who has an odd sort of artistic temperament.

Cool story.

Framed, mounted and displayed are one thing. They're fascinating then.

Crawling around is another.

I went to an Insectarium once where the manager had a big beetle attached to her shirt via chain. Turned out to be alive, a form of jewelry for those who have that kind of taste. Nearly pissed myself when it suddenly started running around and around in a circle on her chest with no warning.

I had leaned really close to check it out, I think this was a standard practice of the lady, as she found it hilarious. "check out my beetle broach, notice how intricate it is"

Seems like PETA or the ASPCA should have been called. Poor thing with stuff glued to it and chained to her shirt. See if she found that hilarious.
