I'm not trying to argue, I'm actually curious what the knowledge on that is. 50K has always struck me as a bit light, no real basis for that suspicion beyond a few bits of info I've encountered here and there.
One thing that puzzles me, I guess I could research this further, might be good info on it, though I've not encountered it yet, is how do Neanderthals connect with the humans who left Africa? Did Neanderthals depart from a line of apes, with a sort of common ancestor with humans or is it not that simple? The Chauvet Cave, featured in the Herzog film 'Cave of Forgotten Dreams,' contains paintings estimated to be 32K years old. I guess it's possible that humans could make their way from Africa to France in 18K years, hard to say. I have often wondered if 50K years was long enough for pale red haired Scandinavians to emerge from black African ancestors. Of course it would have been somewhat less than that as we can be fairly certain that pale skin humans lived long before the present day. And the assumption that the humans of that day were black might not be sound, one would think that if conditions in Africa produced black skinned humans at some point, which is uhhh, known, that such would have been the case with the humans who emigrated back in the day. It boggles the mind somewhat.

If we assume common ancestry for hominids, then a recent find in Asia of a fairly intact group has apparently undermined most of what people thought they knew about Homo. I haven't read the Science article, just saw a ref to it. Should be easy to find.
