as far as im concerned as soon as automakers started raising the bed heights past reason, pickups lost a lot.
worked in the fishing industry and the pickup we were using was a 96 straight 6 5 speed ford, bed height was perfect for loading over the side ,hauling water tanks ect. then the next generation was one 3rd as useful, cause you couldnt hoist a loaded fish tote over the side.

that was the period where the big 3 started moving away from utility and towards status. vans are still utility. plus, you can stack way more dead hookers in a van than in a truck bed
