Howdy Dan,
The good old days!¡ Could put $2.00 worth of gas in the tank and it would last a while because that would be about eight gallons. Good thing because I was only makeing $1.35 an hour

Snibble, you're right. I would be VERY HAPPY to be able to buy gas at the prices quoted in this thread. Right now a LITER of 95 octane gasoline costs over 75 cents in Poland. And there's almost four liters to a gallon!
So stop complaing you guys!!! You wouldn't want to know what the average salary is around here ;-)

I guess the distances here are much shorter than in the US. For example I live and work in the same city (a lot of people here do) and drive a total of about 40-50 miles on an average working day.
You?

Canadian price here on southern Vancouver Island is:

75 cents per litre = C$2.835 per US gallon

US Exchange is about C$1.57 to US$1.00

so our gas is about US$1.80 per US gallon

At these prices, the 560SEL had to go. The 300E stays.

Here on the GTA we're paying over 70c a litre Canadian (87 octane, dont know about the higher ratings) . So roughly 45c US a litre, not much better then Europe.

When I get my diesel, Im going to run it on heating oil, which costs like 15c a litre.

You have problems...

...in Germany we currently pay around one € per Liter.

That is about $ 3.50 per Gallon.

Filling up my 22 Gallons tank is two days salary.

So don't wine about your gas prices.

Kind regards
Eberhard

yes but emissions also result in us getting less gas mileage.
Example
My 500
24-27 mpg
normal american

15 mins at minimum wage.

In 1974 it took roughly 15 minutes at minimum wage to buy one gallon. In 2001 (Calif.) it's the same amount of time eventhough they have doubled the taxes.

Same time of work...

...for same amount of fuel? See...

And with the much better mileage we are getting with todays cars driving has never been cheaper.

We did a thorough test for Oldtimer Markt, the biggest german classic car magazin. Four cars with four kinds of fuel and different settings of ignition with a separat test tank for exact results.

What did we find:
Best mileage with highest octan fuel and adjusted ignition (very early)
NO lack of power even with after market catalytic converter (System Wurm) (my car put out 101.8 KW instead of the 100 KW originally)
NO increased fuel consumption at cars with catalytic converter. The car without cat had a better mileage in the beginning, but was hazardous lean.

Kind regards
Eberhard

Do you know what I think is ironic?

This happens every year. This time of year gas prices jump, maybe a little faster some years but they take a jump. If you adjust for inflation gas prices have gone DOWN over the last 20 years. Yet people still make it the single most important issue in the world.

I personally think the US should wage it’s own Oil War and stop buying from the Middle East and buy from Russia instead of giving them cash all the time.

My .02 mpg

The picture depicts why nothing is ever invented in the Middle East.
