It's true, you get used to your area. I spent a winter in Eastern WA, just south of Penticton, BC - not as cold as say, N. Dakota but much colder than Seattle and way colder than these parts and I got by just fine. Almost liked it. Half the time I was sleeping in my van under a down comforter, wearing longjohns.
The climate around here is appealing. Not nearly as hot in summer as Sacramento and often 50s and 60s in the winter.
