Got laid off work today

Got my walking papers at work today along with five others in my department. Merry Christmas indeed :/

On the bright side I have not been happy in my job and have been looking for a month or so and have an interview setup for tomorrow afternoon as well as a few leads from some friends. Thankfully I am not in a position where I have to work to make ends meet but its still a bit stressful. I only wish they had done it during the summer when the weather is more conducive to working on the W123's

After you get accepted to your new job, send the old guys a lump of coal. Really vile to do this just before the holiday.

kerry 12-18-2013 06:55 PM

That sucks. Sorry.

When one door closes...
good luck!

Best wishes. I hope it works out for you.

Makes for a very bad day. More often than not such things work out for the better.

If the opportunity you're interviewing for doesn't workout, post what you do on this forum. Most positions are a result of networking.

Very best of luck.

Golly that sucks, Gator. Best of luck to you.

That bites. Sorry to hear that.

As a note, many people that I that have been looking are getting offers for relocation to many areas in different fields. If you're open for it, let it be known.

BTW...I've been disabled for 2 years next month, and am still getting offers. The latest one was to a place I turned down prior to moving here. They've upped their offer so much that it makes me sick that I can't work.

This could be a blessing in disguise. Life is too short to work at a job you don't like.

gatorblue92 12-18-2013 08:59 PM

It is a blessing no doubt. I was a stay at home dad for a year after my youngest son was born and I miss those days. Its a very hard job but I may just be Mr. Mom again if none of these leads pan out.

SwampYankee 12-18-2013 09:08 PM

Damn. Sounds like you're prepared for it, though. Hope everything works out!

You're a better man than I if you can handle being Mr. Mom for extended periods! :)

Best of Luck.

October used to be the traditional times People were laid off.

What I did sometimes when I was out of a Job I went back to the Local Trade School and took a Class.
It looks good when you go looking for a Job and they ask you what you were doing during the Time you were not working; and somtimes the new skill or education helps you get the next Job.

barry12345 12-18-2013 10:04 PM

Well at least it was not the loss of a job you really liked.

I am well aware that thousands of our Canadian postal workers will soon be looking for jobs. May be a hard go for the majority of them as they were overpaid in comparison to those in the private sector for their skill levels. I certainly would not want to be one of them seeking employment in this economy.

They were so overpaid that their earnings where not disclosed to the public when contract negotiations where underway. That may be very well what killed the postal service as well as the continuing decline of usage and competiton. We used to send presents long distance using them but evolved to sending money and/or gift certificates. The internal package postal charges compared to the United states became absurd.

So, your household had two incomes before today, and you're interviewing tomorrow? Should be doable with severance, unemployment, etc. for quite a while. Might be time for a nice family vacation over the Holidays too.
