Chasing Shackleton?

Anyone else watching Chasing Shackleton on PBS? It's a recreation of his voyage from Elephant Island to South Georgia Island using the same boat and equipment Shackleton did. A gutsy expedition.

No I've been trying to avoid those programs. There's another one of some fools going through the grand canyon on drift wood and then there was a Jeremy Clarkson one of people freezing in the Baltic during WW2...

...I'm really not keen on a water related death or the cold!

My sons and I watched the first episode last night. I read a great book about the voyage a decade ago and re read it a few years back. Unbelievable. So far the PBS version is worth watching.

Their reaching South Georgia Island under those conditions was an astounding navigational feat.

I just set it to record, thanks for the tip. I was fascinated with Shackleton as a kid. The premier will air again tomorrow at 4 a.m. so I'll catch up. Is it weekly or what?

I haven't figured out when the next episode(s) are scheduled to be shown. Has anyone else?

I flew to NYC a few years ago to see the James Caird, his original boat, when it was on display at the Natural History Museum. They had videos playing of the Southern ocean all around the room with sextants hooked up to a computer so you could attempt noon sights and see how accurate you were. Very cool. I think the boat is typically on display at the Greenwich Maritime Museum in London.

Amazing indeed. And their traverse of that island after their landing was pretty wild as well.

One of my favorite parts of the story was that bit about when the crew still on Elephant Island scrambled out to see the boat anchoring off shore and let out a cheer when they saw Shackleton's form coming down the ladder.

I haven't caught any of the PBS show yet, I'll look for it.

I'm sure it will be worth watching. If you've not seen the movie, seemed a lot like a Ken Burns style treatment, came out around 2000, it's worth seeing:
