Doesn't it also suggest an imbalance in is life, that he derives so much enjoyment and satisfaction in the role he has assumed here. The attention seeking behavior could indicate a substantial void, which is arguably satisfied here.

One could reasonably extrapolate in any of a number of possible motivations and implications. He goes through often withering criticism day after day and he is never fazed by it. Most would have turned away but he thrives. I don’t know the motivation but only imagine that the need for attention is very strong. I know of others who will resort to negative behavior in an attempt to get attention. I guess for some being disliked is infinitely preferable to being ignored.
