outdoor gas grill repair

Our gas grill has a tent, for lack of a better word, over the manifold. It's a bent strip of metal that sits a few inches over the flame. It's corroded and barely holds its own shape. What kind of metal should I get to replace it? What paint can I use on it, if anything, considering that we cook over it?

Thanks,
Sixto

I think it's called a diffuser. Stainless steel is typically used. Why paint?

You can buy replacement diffusers I think.

An alternative to a diffuser is to protect the burners with ceramic "lava" rocks. Every couple of years toss out the grease soaked ones and replace with new.

As usual, I asked the question without thinking about it myself I see diffusers for $15-20. I also see similar grills for $40-50 including a tank.

What's left of the old one and replacements I see for sale look painted - http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-number/Kenmore-Parts/Grill-smoker-Parts/L3018S-00-2007/0071/148/Model-14816656010/0582/1500125?keySuffixId=&pathTaken=partSearch&pathRender=modelComponent&documentCompId=50036317&diagramPageId=00001&productTypeId=&searchModelNumber=14816656010&subCompDesc=Grill&brandDesc=KENMORE&modelDesc=GAS%20GRILL&blt=11&shdMod=&keyId=11

I used some old metal angle steel to replace some of mine....
Might have been corner pieces for steel stud framing.
One year so far.
No treatment, just burned 'em in good before putting food on the grill.
If these burn away, I will probably use something thicker next time.
Think these are 16 ga.
