When did the idea of abandoning typical sexual relations in the name of religion begin? It seems such a horrid form of mental and physical abuse, like opting into a handicap that I just can’t figure the utility or even the point of it.

Kerry, this was in excess of forty years ago. Secluded medium size house in the country converted for this special application. Would not be listed in any phone book as a facility I believe. No signage etc.

Function easily guessed a few minutes after enterance. In a pretty run down state externally and internally as well. Hard to remember location with any certainty but a few miles west of Port Hope I think. There was a small chance it may have been a few miles from Bowmanville as well but Port Hope is more likely. I worked both areas.

I sailed out of port hope at the time. I know you have a fair knowledge of the geography.

Were the residents good looking?
just wondering...

I just finished a new book called From Shame to Sin. It's an account of how early Christianity developed its sexual morality and installed it in place of the existing Roman sexual morality. It's a fascinating transformation. By the year 200 or so, sexual asceticism had become the core element of the new religion but as it turned into an imperial ruling system it had to accommodate reproductive families at the periphery of a still sexually ascetic core. It did this by conceding the possibility of legitimate reproductive sex within marriages. Of course none of this was straightforward and it involved lots of disagreements.

I first read your post so quickly that I thought that you wrote "pariah", not "parish".

No period for months and a bulge? Well, OTOH, mind wasn't too strong which is why she chose the path she did so we have to take pity on her.

Now that I think about it, you definitely wouldn't want pregnant nuns mixing with your average run of the mill unmarried pregnant woman because that would put a serious dent in nun authority.
Yes, I know that area. We sailed in and out of Cobourg a number of times although never into Port Hope even though my wife's uncle lived there. We did sail into a small marina west of there with a narrow dog legged channel. Can't remember the name of it. No town right around the marina. That could have been Bowmansville.

Why do nuns always walk in pairs?

Because one nun makes sure the other nun gets nun.

Well they were not dressed in their habits. Although in your case dressing up in them may get you in. You know I really cannot remember one way or another if they were generally good looking or otherwise.

Reminds me of the lady that bet a fellow she could make him walk like a penguin. Told him to drop his shorts down on his shoes. Then went across the room and stripped down and said come on over here.

I believe it finds it roots in Paul's statements that an unmarried person is not distracted by having to please their mate, and so, is free to devote all their time and energy to ministering to the needs of others. Paul also says that it is not for everyone, and that marriage is an honorable institution.
