Not to mention why did people subsequently buy into it? Hard to figure.

New Haven breeds them.

It took me a while to figure out your def of 'hipster'. Here on the beach, (for old time locals, anyway) hipsters are/were older cool dudes & dudettes.

that is exactly why I have a beard as well. Plus there is always food for later trapped in it, so you have that extra storage at hand.

One of my favorite pubs in these parts, the Dutch Goose in Menlo Park features outstanding deviled eggs. Since good beers, such as Sierra Nevada Pale Ale go for $5 a pint, $4.50 a half pint, and I'm only their for the eggs, the flat screen TV sports, and the Stanford girls, I usually go with a half-pint of Bud-light for $3.50 to go with the eggs.

They feature a giant can of PBR, 22 oz. IIRC, on big game days for $2 so I'll get those when I can. Very average to sub-average beer. Without the killer deviled eggs it would be untenable.

PBR was cheap, mass-produced beer that high schoolers would drink to get drunk before hipsters adopted it.
