Officer Accused Of Threatening Starbucks Managers For Free Coffee

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A police lieutenant in Daytona Beach was fired over accusations that he threatened slower emergency response times if he was not given complimentary specialty Starbucks coffee drinks.

Glad the department took action.

Are you guys kidding? Cops get free drugs, free BJs and nooky off hookers, free food, TAKE MONEY OFF DRUG DEALERS and usually never get a ticket or DUI from another officer. FREE PASS TO DO WHATEVER YOU WANT!

If I owned (or managed) a business like Starbucks, I'd certainly give free coffee to officers on-duty. It's a kind gesture, and it CAN build a good relationship and some goodwill to cash in when you might need it. That said, it's a little presumptuous for the officer in question to assume his drinks will always be free. If I were the cop, I'd assume I needed to pay, and be thankful and polite when/if the drinks are free.

Obviously, this particular officer was in the wrong. The second half of my post makes that clear. Now, if I were the "new management" in question, I probably would have continued to give the guy free drinks while he's on duty (unless he had demonstrated his presumptuous attitude in other ways), but I agree that they are under no obligation to do so. Obviously, this officer was in the wrong to make the comments that he did, and deserves what he got. The management should have been smart enough to figure out for themselves that a little generosity in these cases goes a long way, but then again, I'm not losing sleep that there's one less dumb@$$ cop on the beat either.

I'm a Starbucks barista with in a local NC Target store. If it were my call I would give A free coffee to all of the following: any officer on duty, current military person/s in uniform and any recognizable veteran especially WWII.
These people are or have put their life on the line. Besides that it is good PR.
We through away more coffee because of Starbucks fresh brew every 30 minutes rule.
