I'm poorer, shorter, less healthy, and less educated than ....
the average iPhone user. :)
Android users poorer, shorter, unhealthier, less educated, far less charitable than Apple iPhone users – MacDailyNews - Welcome Home Though I wonder what the stats would be for users of high-end Android phones. You'd think that they'd appeal to the geek demographic -- access to the file system, ability to upgrade storage via a flash slot on some devices, no software censorship, and ability to do actual work seems like a winning combo! Let the flames begin... |
I don't even have a smart phone and have no intention of getting one. Once again proving that I am exceptional.
|
Define "high end"-I'm omnitoad on my 2yr old phone, because they don't make sliders anymore and that's the best I could find. Much better than the stock garbage, and worlds better than an i-device. I hear what you're saying though.

Decent specs, LTE, the only peril is only 4 GB of ROM, but that's easily fixable if you root it, partition a 32 GB flash card to hold another 5 GB of apps, and use the remainder of the card for file storage. It's also running 4.1, but 4.4 is actually a disadvantage in some ways due to the way it handles flash storage. |

The data isn't surprising, is it . . . especially when you consider that this is a forum of Mercedes owners. ;)
The socio-economic demographic for Mercedes owners pair up nicely with the iOS crowd. |
What about me? I ditched my iphone 4s on Sunday after the screen went out and got me a Galaxy S.

My LG Slider died after 4 years of faithful service. I replaced it with my kid's 3g iPhone when she upgraded. It works just fine for my needs and it was the right price.

I suspect I'll eventually get an iPhone. A couple weeks ago, a client an I were discussing some issues with the wood paneling in bathroom and I found a spot that was sort of hollow. We dug into it and he eventually spotted a bug, we weren't exactly sure what it was so we captured it, put it in a bit of rubbing alcohol and proceeded to study it. He pulled his iPhone out and took a magnified photo of it (!?). Never seen the like. The photo was clear and it was blown up big time. It was a termite, no surprise, we found pics on the web. I don't run into them often, surprisingly enough.

I use whatever I am given by the folks that figure out what to buy. I still wish I had my old flip phone since the only thing I do with my smart phone is read the news while I am waiting to see someone.

I don't need to be continuously 'connected' to others to validate my existence. It's just another form of addiction/slavery. If people need to contact me I've got an answering machine on a land line. |
Gosh, the reason I have a pherking cellphone is to validate my existence. Danged if I don't continually reveal stuff about myself.

I am an IT Systems tech and only have a "feature" phone. Its cheap, has lasted forever, and covers my mobile needs. E-mail, calling, texting, and very basic web access. "Smartphones" are completely un-necessary, though the powerful marketing campaigns would have you think otherwise. I do have a wifi-based android tablet device for my work, but paying a monthly cell plan for such a device is a huge waste of money. I am almost never in a place where I can't access a wifi network with it...
My phone cost me $75 three years ago and the monthly plan is barely $26. Hard to beat that.... |

-I have wiring diagrams at my fingertips. If I don't have it stored, I can get it on the googs easily. -Torque spec? You got it. -Need to remote into a PC and fix something? Can be done at 65mph from the passenger seat. -Nothing but ads on the radio, and NPR has Diane croaking along again? Streaming radio fills the gap nicely. -Receipts from the trip? Snap a photo, import & uploaded to the expense report while I'm waiting for my luggage. -Want to handle any kind of paperwork ASAP-receive it on the phone, review, sign, & turnaround as soon as it's available. -Mobile hotspot for the laptop while on the road? Easy-peasy -GPS without needing a separate gadget? |
^^ I'm with Simpler/Better. There so much functionality to be had "as required" on even a two-year old android that can be had for peanuts that it's silly not to have one. Now, having a data plan that you pay through the nose whether you use it or not isn't so smart. I use Lyca and turn on data when I need it or grab data from a "free" FreedomPop phone.

That this appears on "Mac Daily News" tells you all you need to know.
I'm above the curve on everything except the "healthier" demarcation, and the fact that smartphone users generally tend to be on the younger side explains that more than which phone someone chooses. Personally I just can't buy into the i-life. I've never been an Apple/Mac/iOS fan and I guess I never will be. While I like and appreciate their products, I have no buy-in for their overarching framework and mentality. I work in tech as well and was a little saddened when work made the decision to go to smartphones. My little Nokia was an ideal phone and lasted for days with the use I gave it. At least work gave me a choice with a smartphone so I didn't have to go Apple; I was a blackjack user (Windows 6.5) for quite a while and when the last one died (that wheel was buggy) I moved to the Nokia Windows 8 phone. The only complaint I have about it is the same as I'd have for the iPhone: battery life. But turning off background data cures that ill, or it would if work permitted that, but they want me tied in with synchronized system emails. OTOH, they pay for it, so who am I to complain? ;) |
I was a fairly early adopter of a smartphone. Moving from carrying a Palm Pilot, Motorola Startac and occasionally a camera at the same time, to a Treo, then an iPhone. I no longer feel the need to wear a watch or have any other personal electronics on me. The apps on the phone provide a nice array of tools and services that once required a PC.

Windows 8 Phone/RT is obnoxious in that Micro$h1+ really, REALLY pushes you to buy software via their store. Android is a far better choice -- out of the big three, it's also the least gimped and locked in. The Android device that I have now (LG Optimus F3) also has pretty phenomenal battery life, even with push email and cellular data running. |

Also, if you don't mind, you mentioned a few posts above about rooting an LG to get past the 4GB ROM and use the flash memory, do you mind sharing the process or links thereto? I've not rooted my LG, but that's my only complaint about it and that would make it worthwhile. Well, assuming that the EZ tether app would still work. ;) |

(1) install the USB drivers for your phone on your computer, available on the LG site (2) follow these instructions. the download link for Saferoot is at the bottom of the thread: [ROOT] Saferoot: Root for VRUEMJ7, MK2, and Android 4.3 - xda-developers (3) download a root checker from the Play Store to check for root access. Give it superuser permissions after running it (SuperSU will ask). (4) put in a flash memory card (5) follow step #2 of these instructions. step #1 may also work, but I needed to use saferoot since motochopper didn't work: LG Optimus F3: Move Apps to SD Card | Michael Morana |

Fools and their money are soon parted. I agree with with Simpler/Better & RS899.
Older things like my '89 vehicles, old Craftsman tools, an 'obsolete' cell phone, a computer made in 2009, old guns, etc., are usually more reliable, a heck of a lot less expensive, and are made to be maintained and fixed, not discarded for the newest fashion accessory their Holywierd heroes carry. |

I'm certainly not boosting all of those averages. :P
I'm not a Apple devotee; although the wife, two oldest kids and I all have iPhones. And that's only because our largest supply partner bought all of my sales reps wireless iPads for order entries and speed & ease of use for price lists and product info when on the road. I got us all iPhones for ease of info transfer and updating as well as being able to view and use almost all of the same apps from either device. No other reason. It's great having all of our price lists, product and spec sheets handy when I'm not at my desk and we all have wireless printers. I personally tend to be two generations behind with the iPhone. In fact, I've been running a 4-something with a non-functioning home button for over a year (thank you virtual home button via Accessibility!) and the Mrs. is a model behind me. Kids have newer just because I got them for them the Christmas before last. The Mrs. and I are probably due for an upgrade so I'll probably hold off until Apple rolls out the 5++ or 6 or whatever they call it and pick up early 5's for us. |

I'm continually impressed that whatever the topic, not only does Bot have some useful knowledge, he manages to crack me up. Nicely done. Spdrun, thanks for the details. I have an older LG Optimus but at least I have the outline of what to do, and the xda forums info is very good. My phone already allows me to move some apps to the sd card, but getting rid of the bloatware would also be nice. |

I like my 5S more than my 4S, the screen and larger and like the Lexus that it is, it just ****en works!:D
I don't give a crap about techy stuff, I press a button and it works, if I have a warranty problem I go to the Apple Store and its handled. I use the features on my phone for work all the time, the little flashlight is handy, texting/email/pictures are a must. I also have a level app, weather app, NOAA app for sailing, and some real time wind and Doppler radar apps which are priceless. The Siri voice command to navigation is awesome when your driving, and internet access is indispensable when I'm in the field, I can look up suppliers numbers and have access to the city GIS data. Very handy tools when properly used, I fully intend to get either the 6 or 6S when it comes out. I'll probably wait until the S version I like buying them mid cycle with all the bugs worked out and upgrades. |
