If I ever think about buying a 2wd truck again I want someone here to b**** slap me hard.
This late season snow caught me by surprise and now my truck is parked at one of my uncles vacant houses down the street. But in trying to get up my hill I almost slid into a rock wall and took out the side of my truck. ![]() Typically I carry 600 pounds of sand bags, a shovel and a bucket of lose sand. But today all I did when I left home was throw in 300 pounds of sand bags because I figured it was just flurries, yeah that worked. ![]() I'm pretty sure a Corvette ZR1 on racing slicks would do better than my truck! If I have my truck for another winter I'm buying chains.

Eww. Would a LSD been of any help? Would the 2WD been OK if you had had 600# of sand in the back?

Yeah don't have that either, I'm shocked you can still buy any truck without an LSD but even today its a $400 option.

You can't give away RWD trucks in my area. I haven't had a RWD vehicle for almost 25 years. This morning I drove my AWD Taurus SHO to work, driving on slippery, snow-crusted hills, and it didn't miss a beat.

LSD is great if you are driving on a soft surface in which the tires sink a bit, minimizing the truck's lateral movement. On a smooth, slick road with a pronounced crown, having two wheels spinning at the same time means the truck will slide sideways under power, planting the right rear corner of your rear bumper into the door of that Chrysler 300 parked at the curb.

Limited slip with good m and s tires and 600# in the back gets me through all the slippery stuff. I stay out of the mud though. limited slip with no weight in the back is no fun on snow or ice.

Does Connecticut allow the use of studded snow tires?

I gave up on RWD only trucks about 15 years or so ago. We had a hell of a snow storm hit us, and I couldn't go anywhere, no matter how much weight I had (over 1200# of steel in the bed at the time). Since then, it's been 4WD or AWD. I'm old school in my thinking, and would prefer manual locking hubs mainly because they are easily replaced, whereas automatic locking isn't. However...the wife's Tahoe has the button to press instead of the shifter on the floor.

Yeah this will be my last RWD truck, they are good in CA or FL where it never snows other than that, forget about it.
Next winter I'm either getting snow chains or a 2014 Silverado with 4wd, problem solved!

The traction difference between my old W126 and my attorney's E350 4Matic is as large is it is between my truck and a Mog. Trucks and SUV's really only have an advantage if the snow gets very deep, but in light snow or ice a good AWD car will run circles around them, especially if equipped with modern snow tires.

Yep.
Buying a 5th wheel, with a pin weight that exceeds my current truck. Solution - DRW Duramax.
