Anybody Get Steroid Injections for Back Pain?
Do they work?
Any interesting side effects? Will my doubles turn into homeruns? |

Not for back pain, but for tendonitis in my elbow. Worked great. My BIL had some for back problems and they worked for him.

My brother got them when he played football in college. You are supposed to get only a finite number a year. My opinion is that if I ever needed them, I would put it off as long as possible if it is for something chronic. If to cure a short time inflammation, I may change my mind.

I have been getting injections for more than 10 years.
1.They do work when properly placed, insist on Fluoroscopic guidance. 2. The only side effect is a good one, steroid euphoria. 3. Not enough roid to get you to third base. |

Thanks for the feedback.
I start my first one next week. Yes Fluoroscopic guided. I was getting bored with my morning cocktail - needed a new fix. |

Speaking of fix, conscious IV sedation, lala land ain't all bad the local unsedated is mighty uncomfortable I did it a few times and am not a fan.

I'm 48 years old and have been battling lower back pain since March. Went the chiro (manipulation) -> general practitioner (meds) -> neuro surgeon (meds) -> pain specialist (injection) -> physical therapy route.
I had a cortisone injection in my SI joint about 4 weeks ago followed by two weeks of pretty intensive core strength and flexibilty PT. For the first time in 8 months, I can walk upright and wrestle with my kid. My pain specialist put me on a fluorscope table, administered a local then immediately hit me with the larger cortisone needle before the local had time to take effect. It hurt, but it was worth it. If I ever need another, I will insist on some time between the local and the cortisone.

The effect of the local is immediate, sometimes they go too deep for a local to work well which is the reason for the conscious sedation. There is a huge YMMV on this one. I went a few years without the sedation until I got a new pain doc that used sedation over local at that time I wished that I met him a few years earlier. Of course you can't eat or drink 8 hours before or drive home but its a hell of a lot more comfortable.

I forgot to mention cost. They billed $1309 for this procedure. They listed it as surgery. $880 for "surgery" and another $260 for "radiological services." What a crock.
