Diabetes sucks...

...especially when you hate needles.

Blindness, neuropathy, gangrene and premature death suck even more. Be grateful for the needle if it prevents or forestalls such developments.

Yeah, neuropathy sucks, but I can't stand needles. They make me queasy and weak kneed.

In the past two years I've gone from hypoglycemic to type 2 diabetic. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, since it's prevalent on both sides of my family. It's a legacy I could have done without. At least it explains the blurred vision issues I've been having for the past 3-4 months.

Probably not much of a consolation but my cat was just diagnosed as diabetic. He has to be on a special diet and insulin for the rest of his life. He does not seem to be a fan of needles either. And he has 5 of his own on each paw to press that point (no pun intended) home.

As other have pointed out, the needles beat the alternative.

jp,

Even if it beats the alternative, it still stinks. I have to get allergy shots regularly -- can't imagine actually giving them to myself. I hate needles.

G'luck, man.

I would NOT want to give any cat shots ! You are a brave man. I hope you have your will/trust/whatever straightened out...

We've been giving sub-cutaneous fluids to one or more cats for coming on two years now. B12 shots are pretty routine. Various other shots in various cats means I'm sticking a kitty a couple times a week. I'd rather stick 'em than pill 'em....

Been injecting myself with anti-TNF drugs for 5+ years. A bit uncomfortable, but poking myself with needles doesn't make me squeamish.

Closest I come to getting uneasy around needles is when I have to get steroid injections. In my eyeball. Ain't no looking away from that needle.

luckily, insulin needles are very small...have you ever looked into an insulin pump? could you just do oral meds?

I think they are saying it is more than just the carbs now. Since the tobacco companies and chemical companies took over the food industry it all went to hell.

I'm on a low salt, low sugar, low fat, low enjoyment diet...I go off the diet about twice a month, when we go out to eat. Even then, I generally eat from the lite menus. I've been doing this since my heart attack.

It seems that no matter what I do or what I eat, the cards are against me. My next step is to go to a complete paleo diet, and try my luck there.

Genetically speaking, I'm screwed...I know this. With as many generations in my family line that had or has diabetes, I knew this was coming. I tried to avoid it. I did, however, make it to 41 before being diagnosed with it. Some in my family were diagnosed in their 20's.

Paleo might not be a bad way to go, just watch your protein sources. Low-carb vegetarian would also be a good option. Exercise is good for diabetes and heart disease, but weight loss is easier for most people from calorie restriction than it is from calorie burning.

To what extent have you altered your diet? Are you thinking you're stuck with only meds as a solution?
I've mentioned it before but it's worth mentioning again. I've drastically reduced my HbA1C numbers simply by restricting carbohydrates. I gave up bread and all bread-like products with the exception of low-carb tortillas. I gave up potatoes and most root vegetables in all forms. No rice, no pasta. I still eat beans, still drink (probably too much) beer. My diet is not low-fat. Lots of meat and quality fats. Coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, grapeseed oil, leaf lard, butter. Although not overweight to begin with I have lost 25 pounds in 6 months and belly fat (which is DIRECTLY linked to high blood sugar) has disappeared. I know full blown type 2 diabetics who are managing their condition quite well through diet without having to stick themselves. Your doctors will poo-poo this. Don't listen to them.

Low fat is not the key. Whole grains are not the key. NO grains are the key. Take fiber supplements. "Lite" foods are often higher in carb fillers to replace fats, and also more salt. Give up processed food. As near as I can figure I only consume three things that come in a package. Beer, canned tomatoes and kosher salt. Paleo is essentially what I do, but I don't eschew legumes. I need my beans on Sunday. You WILL lose weight and your blood sugar will go down. Your heart health and diabetes are NOT unrelated.
