2009 Mercedes E350 Sludged Up Engine - YouTube
I know a couple people who do this, trade in Mercedes after 24 month leases and 30k miles with the factory oil... I'd never buy even a low mileage used Mercedes without records of oil changes.

What the Mercedes-Benz dealer does (CPO vehicles)
I bought a CPO 2011 e350 Sport that was about a year and a half old, from my nearest Mercedes-Benz dealer.
![]() The car had been leased new from Downtown LA Motors Mercedes-Benz, and then turned in to the dealer @20k. It was due for an oil change every 10k and the lessor only changed the oil once, @10k. But as part of the Mercedes-Benz CPO process, @20k the oil was changed, and everything else needed for the MB CPO certification - which is pretty strict - was performed. Then, fully serviced, it was offered to me as a CPO unit, and I bought it. But, I changed its oil every 3k after that, and had no problems. Except one. The car felt competent, but BORING. A few hundred miles before the big 40k service, I drove it, fully detailed, down to the BMW dealer nearby. Came out with THIS. (new 535i M sport) ![]() ![]() It is, as they say in the Southwest, "slicker than snake spit".

Over on another MB board there was a recent post by a dealer tech that was rebuilding the engine from an S550. The oil had never been changed; the owner simply drove it from new until failure. The car had about 55K miles on it, IIRC.

This reminds me of when Roy Hunter http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/345116-met-supreme-diesel-penny-pinching-moron.html. Seriously, this guy put 295,000 miles on an E300 D Turbo on a maintenance schedule that ran something like this:

I know. And what I find even more shocking is that this fellow bought the car new, so he's apparently got some sort of decent income and could most likely have afforded the maintenance no problem. Also, you just don't imagine a Mercedes buyer as someone who both appears to have some sort of basic mechanical skills but absolutely neglects the car in an almost totally insane way. Furthermore.. well, there's so many shocking things about that that I won't even try listing them. It just makes me go:

This must be very common. An old friend who used to work at Mercedes-Benz of Beverly Hills as a mechanic told me about an older lady that brought in a 2002 CL63 AMG on a flatbed with a seized engine. 33K miles and never changed the oil.

Mercedes doesn't do free oil changes? My girlfriends CPO Audi and my BMW both came with free oil changes.
They would only pay for them every 10,000 miles though, so on the Audi we did our own in between dealer changes. Personally I love the E300 story, makes me optimistic for my 280k mile W124.

When I bought my 99 ML320 new, the salesman said the first scheduled maintenance was free. I took it in for the A Maintenance. When I picked it up, they told me I owed them $190. I reminded them of the "free maintenance." Found out the labor was free. They still charged me for all the supplies including 10 quarts of oil at $12 each and a bunch of other overpriced stuff.
But it taught me to check the details of anything offerred.
