Looks like a wandering bit of angle iron (framed by the left side > ) flopping about in there.

Are you referring to the axle shaft being detached from the differential?

My #1 guess is the item circled in black; is that an axle out of the diff?

My #2 guess is the item circled in red; that axle boot looks a bit funny, almost as if something is impinging on it.

The axle is from this guy... She spun the tires through first and second, and after shifting into third, she started going "thump thump thump". oops!

A nice automatic transmission swap would cushion the driveline aft of the trans from the consequences of such hooliganry...
