I'd just buy a used replacement on Craigslist at this point if they were easy to find. However this is a front control dryer and not a top control. They are very rare on Craigslist around here. Zillions of cheap dryers but very few front control ones.

I gave up on the diagnosis. Bought an identical machine for $150 off craigslist. I'll strip off all the useable parts from the malfunctioning one to keep as spares.

Got the old one all stripped out. Still can't identify the source of the problem. I removed and inspected the whole wiring harness and it had no visible problems. I'm thinking Mark must be correct and it's in the wiring inside the motor. The professionals over at an appliance forum were bamboozled by the symptoms also.
