4batteries * 3.6Voperating=14.4v
4batteries * 4.2Vmax=16.8v

So if your charger cuts off at 14.5V you should be fine, really under 16.8V and you're OK.
End point charge may be different on lithium ion. I suspect this is what Tom has. Still I do not know. I thought it was about 3.7 but my memory is not working on this.

Otherwise you would be right if the normal charger really cut off accurately. Your charge voltages are absolutely right for lithium polymer. Actually the normal car cut off charger may not reach 16.8. That would be a signifigant overcharge on a cars normal sulphuric battery. On some reflection Toms battery may do fine with a true cut off charger for a normal cars battery.

Most just charge until the output voltage of the charger is met by the battery voltage. Then all output current to the battery stops. In otherwords an unregulated charger. Any unregulated charger must be read with no load. The load will reduce the apparent voltage and it will rise as the battery aquires charge and the current drops off.

Since I already invested in the fancy dedicated charger I went ahead and bought another ballistic battery one size larger.

The charger though is so complicated it must be programmed.

Yikes!

If you still think that the old battery case cracked because of the car bottoming out, can you place some type of cushioning material between the bottom of the battery and the battery cradle?

Most of the complex ones have a microprocessor on board now. Programable is good as other applications may be met in the future.

I'll be putting some rubber under the new battery. I also considered the idea that I might have cracked the case by overcharging it.
