68 Corvette with Studebaker six

Update & Photos: Corvette w/ Stude Champion 170!

I spotted this oddball over on the Studebaker forum. I reckon its one step from a diesel corvette.

Perfect example of having a car which needs a motor and a motor that needs a car.

I wonder what that engine weighs compared to small and big-block Chevy engines.

As far as power plant quality goes, taking out an SBC and replacing it with a studebaker six is an upgrade.

Different. I'd rather see a Duramax in a Vette. That would be pretty cool.

The little champion six is pretty small. 170 CI I believe and I bet it doesn't weigh 400#.

My guess is a bare 5.7L GM block weighs just under 200#

I'd like to build a Cobra kit car with a 617 motor and the 240 4 spd. At least that car would be pretty light. The Corvette of that year is around 3500 lbs. Every Corvette I sat in gave me claustrophobia. I felt better in a Lotus Europa than in a Corvette.

Its certainly interesting, but the idea that he did it for fuel economy I struggle to believe. 90hp and 4.56 gears in a 3500lb car, not so much.

He says he gets 23 highway. I imagine that car with its original engine would have gotten less than 20 depending on transmission and rear diff.

Other than that though, he may love simplicity which a flathead six has in spades, and serviceability.
