Thinking about dumping landline

There are many options but I need help deciding on which one. I looked at Majic Jack,Straight Talk Vonage and Basic Talk. I would like to keep the same number and be able to use my landline phones. Help Thanks

I have tried Majicjack and vonage and didn't get good service from either. I now have had Phone Power for several years and am very pleased. I disconnected the land line from my house, Added a telephone cable from the Phone Power box to my in-house system and every thing including CID works great.

Landline with Internet access costs me next to nothing extra. Landline has the advantage of working even without electricity and being nearly 100% reliable. (And yes, I have a line-powered phone.)

When I said landline I meant AT&T phone service. I never herd of (landline).

I know -- I'd keep the AT&T phone service. It doesn't seem to be much cheaper to dump it, and landlines are extremely reliable.

I kept a record of how many real phone calls I received over a six month period. The total sum was zero.

Everyone who knows me using my cell because they want to talk to me and they know I travel.

I did get a lot of robo-calls, 'surveys' with loaded questions, and wrong numbers.

So I finally dropped it after a friend of mine put it like this: "Why would I pay for a bell in my house that anyone can ring?"

I turn the bell off at night. I hate talking on a cell phone radiation box, so if I'm home or in home office, I call people back on the land line.

I don't think I'll ever dump my wired phone. What do the MajicJack type services do about 911? Do you have some person named Debbie in Bangladesh handling your emergency call?

It seems most people just use there cell phones.

I think it rings to the local 911 emergency PSAP or at least is supposed to. They map it by address, which is why they ask for address when you set up the account.

"Tip+ Ring"/"Copper"/ "Landline"

10 years ago when we dumped the Bellsouth (Now A.T.+T., AGAIN),to the curb,
Their billing approached $60.00 U.S.D. per month.
Paying THAT was Insanity!

1. Try and find a "Payphone" inside CONUS these days...Very,Very,Very difficult.
Because the Wireline Carriers did away with them all years ago.
Why? No Profits!!!
Wireless killed Public access Wireline,

2. Almost ALL the V.O.I.P. (Voice over Internet Protocol) carriers:
YMAX (Y'all know them as Magic Jack),Etc,Etc,Etc. are trying run
a communications system that requires a Fortune on a Tin Can
Budget.
PLUS each and every time the "Signal" is forced to go through
a Wireline OR Wireless Carrier's Switch/Tower the DEGRADATION
of Quality is Immense!
You don't really think the Big Carriers have only one level of Delivery?
Y'all are blaming the Tin Can for signal quality degradation caused by
the Legacy Carriers self protectionism.

PLUS,To use V.O.I.P. you've gotta have Internet Access,WHICH in
The U.S. means Comcast,Etc.,Etc.,Etc.(UNLESS you're close enough
to a unprotected WiFi network to use it's access.) The Cable companies
can't even keep the Cable T.V. up and running on good weather days.
So,that's the second INSTABILITY of domestic V.O.I.P. CAUSED by
ANOTHER outside source, y'all are blaming on the WRONG Actor.

(Separate RANT may be available on the Ponzi scheme CABLE in the U.S.
has turned into,at a later date.)
Example: Comcast has RAPED everybody in the U.S.,Financially,that they
BOUGHT NBC Universal OUTRIGHT!

3. Who is paying for the OLD "Copper" GRID and all it's associated costs in
C.O.N.U.S. ? WIRELESS USERS !!! ZOMEZINGs gotta connect all those
Towers.

4. Communications entities OWN the F.T.C., F.C.C., AND Congress through
their Lobbyists.

5. I don't actually believe agencies like FSB, NSA,Etc.,Etc. had anything to
do with the Exponential growth of Wireless,BUT it sure has made catching
Stupid Crooks and/or Terrorists easier.

6. BUT,for average consumers Wireless is just too easy,And Just like Crack!

7. Motorola had the Solution in it's Iridium Satellite Telephone Network...
(BUT the economies of scale didn't work quickly enough for launch of
Consumer Satellite service.) If EVERYONE had a Sat Phone,Like everyone
has a cellphone now,the Wireline Grid would have "Gone Away" due to
Costs.
Iridium's still up there and running,But [actually] by whom I don't even
want to Know. Mayhaps they have a three letter designation?
Satellite can be made Secure.

I haven't had a landline in fourteen years.

Why do you want the landline phone? For my case, the wife faxes scripts so we need it and it costs me less than $5 a month. Now if we didn't need the fax or she could use some other means and just push a button, I'd be all for it but she isn't tech savvy so we just program the numbers into the speed dial and go for it. Beyond that, I have no real reason for a land line.

As to AT&T, even if it was free, there is NFW they would be allowed any products in my house. Before we signed on the line for the house, I checked to see if my internet company would service that area. If it was only AT&T, it would be a dealbreaker. I get internet and cable. With that, the phone is a couple bucks so WGAS. Easier than to deal with trying to get faxes across for the wife when I am not in the house and have to do it over the phone.

i got rid of my landline about a yr and a half ago.got a verizon home connect box.costs 20 bucks a month and gets billed like a 4th phone on my cell phone bill.unlimited minutes.i have a cordless phone with 3 differentcordless handsets.i plug the main one into the connect box in the kitchen and the other 3 are in the garage, basement and our bedroom.and i still have my same landline number.only drawback is no fax and 911 system might not be able to locate.but i'm happy with it so far.

davidmash 06-14-2014 12:35 AM

Try Ooma. Yo ubuy the box for about $100 or so. You have to have high speed internet. Hook up and you get all the bells and whistles for just the tax. A friend has it and he pays less than $5 a month I think.
