The $50 lesson

Recently, while I was working in the flower beds in the front yard, my neighbors stopped to chat as they returned home from walking their dog.

During our friendly conversation, I asked their little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up. She said she wanted to be President some day.

Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her, "If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?"

She replied... "I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people." Her parents beamed with pride! "Wow...what a worthy goal!" I said. "But you don't have to wait until you're President to do that!" I told her.

"What do you mean?" she replied.

So I told her, "You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and trim my hedge, and I'll pay you $50. Then you can go over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out and give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house."

She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, "Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?"

I said, "Welcome to the Republican Party."

Her parents aren't speaking to me anymore.

Uh, you do know this joke has been around since the 1920's, don't you?

And the basic flaw in the joke is that nowhere in it does the question come up of why is the homeless guy homeless? Maybe he is too handicapped to work at mowing the lawn but he could be doing some sort of other useful work.

Another flaw is that she is talking about government, which is the using of resources to provide for the common good of the citizens, and the other guy is talking about her running a charity.

You do understand those are two different things, don't you?

Of course, when you break the story down there is no logic to it, so I guess the punch line is apt.

By the way...

I analyze scripts for a living and consult on them as well. I normally have a min fee of $15,000, but consider this a free sample.

After all, this was only one page, not 120, and it was pretty easy to see the hole in the plot.

The $50 lesson

Another good joke ruined by hypersensitivity.

Also, another person in the "entertainment" industry. This place is chock full.

Not directed at the OP....

I am a retired eye doc. Every day I would see able bodied younger people who did not want to work. They were quite content to live on the dole. Most drove newer cars than I do . All had Obama phones and were generally living well.

Probably only 20-30% of those who are on the dole are either too sick to work or are looking for work. The vast majority are there because it is easy.

LOL @ did not want to work. But maybe they do? How do that many people afford eye care? I never heard of that on the dole. Every day? Ever feel bad about taking their gubbament $? So you had good business from them yet still couldn't muster enough $ to get a newer car than the indigent? WTF?? How do you know they had obama phones, and was there even such a thing that far back before you retired?? Where do you get your statistics from? Oh wait, 'probably'

And the attack begins. I too see a lot of freeloaders on the gov dole. But its better for the topic to ignore that.

No one mentioned "homeless bums" by the way.

I retired in Jan 14. We took public aid in the office and they would come in for their free glasses. They would tell me that they got their phones through public aid. Did you see the smiling face after the car age statement. I choose to not drive a car with a computer in it.

I'll analysis a hole in Idle's analysis and I won't charge, either.

LiberalsProgressives are great at confiscating money from those who are earn it and giving it to those who don't. However, they do less well using their own money for such causes.

And I also committed the same error---over-generalizing. SOME homeless people ARE lazy, and have just found a way to make a living w/o working. (No one ever said ALL). SOME homeless people are incapable of work. Only a very tiny, maybe non-existent, fringe favors doing nothing to help those unfortunates.
It makes poor public policy to be governed by the exceptions rather than the rule.
Also SOME liberals/ progressives are generous philanthropists--but the majority are pretty sting with their own money.

Why the personal attack? Isn't that against forum rules?

GREAT Joke !

Does it really matter if it's one day old or 1,000 days or 10,000 days? What difference does it make now? And, the moral of the story is very true and who cares if folks seem to be upset? The truth is the truth. Of course some folks who don't work are not able to work for valid reasons. But, the unwelcomed truth is that a majority of those who can but don't work and receive a handout do so because they are lazy and it's easier to get a handout than work. It's a personal ethic and those who advocate and support that ethic have their reasons. I can speculate what those reasons are, but that is a topic of a different thread to come. Some politicians have figured out that those with their hand out do in fact vote.

Too bad those who work and have part of their earnings seized so that money can be redistributed are not more vocal and active in politics. I guess working takes up a bunch of time and those who don't work have a lot of "free" time on their hands to pursue other interests ...
