Man portable? Not so much. Mobile anti-aircraft? Quite easily.

Oh, and Barry? Yeah, the B-52 is still out there, and in that part of the world, the Tu-95 is quite plentiful. Both can be quite formidable weapons systems, and pose significant threats to those on the ground.

" 20:31:

In the YouTube footage a militant nicknamed "Major" is seen saying it was shot down by "Cossacks from the Chernukhino roadblock".

Major goes on to say: "It is definitely a civilian plane... there was a lot of people on board," BBC Monitoring reports.
20:27:

BBC Monitoring reports more from the conversation between militants allegedly intercepted by the Ukrainian Security Service.

The conversation starts with Igor Bezler, a key militant, apparently telling a Russian security official by phone that the pro-Russian militants have shot down a plane.
20:23:

The Ukrainian Security Service SBU has published on its Youtube account what it says are intercepted conversations between pro-Russian militants in which they say they admit shooting down a civilian plane, BBC Monitoring reports. "

This should endear the rebels to the world.

On a positive note, at least Malaysian Air knows where this one crashed.

I'm no expert but I think a portable SAM has a range of 8,000 feet max since that's all the fuel they can carry.

To be man portable it has to be something a man can pick up, and the weight of the fuel is what limits the range.

But truck mounted? The sky is truly the limit.

Good one. No more anguish about where it might be. Wonder if this means their ticket prices will be as low as the plane is relative to sea level.

How would truck mounted work? As easily as shoulder fired? I wouldn't think so. Wouldn't it have to be more sophisticated than say a Stinger?

Now that the rebels have this 'accomplishment' under their belt (and you can bet Putin won't be taking credit no matter what is found out) Ukraine should go all Israel on em.

Make a notification for non combatants to get out of dodge and then mercilessly go after every hardware asset and stronghold the rebels have and any one willing to stand in the way - regardless of collateral anything.

The time is right. Right now.

The world doesn't want hardware in the hands of those that can't be trusted with it. Claiming the airspace (informally as it was) of well established international routes? Wrong fight to pick.

Putin is suddenly at his weakest today on intervention. He wants to be seen interfering with Ukraine preventing another MH17 for sake of world stability?

It could be argued Ukraine has as much obligation to police these guys as the Palestinians do about Hamas, so to avoid Russia punishing them they should do this. Goose meet gander.

Perfect timing with the new sanctions as well all the influence they have.

Too bad 295 died, but they body count against the rebels.

Seize the moment Ukraine, you will never have a better chance.

Those things are usually found with a support team of personnel, vehicles and equipment, although they can break out tactically. Google it up

The Redeye has a 12,000 feet ceiling. Mobile SAM systems of old such as HAWK and Nike Hercules could reach airliners very easily. The difficulties surrounded electronic countermeasures as found in military targets. With any of the old systems taking out an airliner would have been like shooting fish in a barrel.

BUK has 25,000m ceiling. The 777 was well within its range.

For our country to do that, sure. However, what I am curious about is whether a couple of regular guys could simply operate that without proper training. IOW, would it be possible for say a small group to operate or is there a country behind it?
