I partially agree - the problem is their cars drop in value so fast that this job is totaling them out. 5-10 year old cars are heading to the junkyard because of a job that is less than $1000 in parts, closer to $500, but takes over 2 grand in labor to complete. At least the audis with the rear chain and tensioners still have some value after a decade!

The Ford engineers probably reviewed the timing chain layout for VW's W-12 and felt a need for a little one-upmanship...

Well this came in the mail today, along with the service manual. It actually doesn't look too daunting, going to try and not rotate anything by keeping a clamp on the crank at all times. Tomorrow it goes under the knife!

hows the project coming?

I just grabbed a 99 explorer with the 4.0, and I cant remember which cam and valve arrangement it has, but it looks like it might also have a rear timing chain as well as fronts depending on SOHC or not.

Ill know when its towed down here

So i confirmed i have the same motor as you, though interesting to me that the 4wd trucks have a 4th timing chain to turn an additional balance shaft the internet says.

What a complex arrangement! Mine has only 70k, but i have a slight rattle at start up, which apparently is linked to chain tensioners losing strength. Fortunately for you and i, it seems that these tensioners can at least be replaced for front and rear timing chains with the motor installed.

Im going to do a few oil changes and see if it persists. We love the truck so far though. You will enjoy it when you get yours running

You can do the rear chain if you remove the transmission... Pick your poison, I'd rather do it out of the truck than underneath.

Im in MIL hell with mine now. Put new gaskets on your intake manifold ,just to head that common vac leak MIL issue off. Cannot get it to pass inspection yet.

Hey TC, if you find a way to completely eliminate the smoke smell, let me know.

My Magnum has been thoroughly cleaned, I ran several bombs through the AC/heating ducts, and it's MUCH better.

Once the summer heat gets the interior blazing, the smell is evident again.
